AMS 110 (online) Fall 2020 Syllabus Course Title: AMS 110 Probability and Statistics in the Life Sciences Stony Brook Course ID number 89232 and 89233 Course Description: A survey of probability theory and statistical techniques with applications to biological and biomedical situations. Topics covered include binomial, normal, and chi-square random variables; tests of hypotheses; confidence intervals; t-tests; analysis of variance, regression and contingency tables. May not be taken for credit in addition to AMS 310. Prerequisites: One semester of calculus (AMS 151 or MAT 125 or 131 or 141). 3 credits

Office hours Office Hours will be held through Zoom. It is not mandatory to attend these office hours, but we would encourage you to join the public zoom meetings scheduled whenever you need help on this material. It is wise to maintain "in-person" contact to facilitate learning whenever possible. For all Zoom calls, please mute your microphone unless you are speaking or otherwise directly participating in the discussion. Each TA will be holding 3 office hours per week via Zoom. Please check staff information for office hours and click on Zoom meetings in the margin of Blackboard to join a scheduled office hour. No appointment is necessary, simply join. Each TA will also be checking the Discussion board on Blackboard daily for your general questions. Outside of office hours, you may post on the Discussion board. One of us will respond quickly. Examinations: Your exams will be administered online using Respondus Monitor. A dummy quiz will be available to get you familiar with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor. Accordingly, the goal is that any issues related to taking exams on Blackboard will be resolved very early (8/30/20 due date of dummy quiz), prior to the exams themselves. Always remember to first start Respondus and then go to Assignments on Blackboard to access your dummy quiz and your exam. Any attempt to cheat on an exam will have serious consequences. It will result in a grade of Q for the semester. Q: Academic dishonesty. This will change to an F after a year. A note will be made on your permanent record at the university.
