You CAN’T do well in this course without reading the assigned material before coming to class. Be prepared to allocate a significant amount of time and practice good TIME MANAGEMENT (Refer to suggested study strategies on page 4 and FAQs pages 8-9). Our Weekly assignments contain the following material: 1. Pre-Class Activities: • Assigned chapters - should be completed BEFORE you come to lecture, due by 3:30PM day of the lecture. More information about reading textbook through TopHat can be found here • Questions embedded in assigned chapters – count toward TopHat Participation • Lecture Notes – read prior to coming to lecture • Post your questions or provide feedback to peers’ questions in the TopHat discussion boards 2. Class Activities: participation items presented during lecture, counts towards TopHat Participation. Must attend lecture live to participate. 3. Post Class HW: TopHat HW Quiz - These HW quizzes count for 15% of your course grade. You will be assigned a homework quiz after each lecture, which will be due at 2pm the week after EACH lecture: ● You will be given two attempts for each question. ● The quizzes are available only for one week and will be automatically submitted on the due date. ● After the due date passes, there will be no extensions or make-ups for missed HW quizzes, do NOT ask for one. It is your responsibility to finish the assignments before the deadline. ● Complete HW assignments EARLY to avoid any emergencies preventing you from finishing them before the due date. If a technical issue prevents you from submitting, email me immediately before the deadline. No extensions will be given on the due day or after the deadline has passed, NO EXCEPTIONS. More information about doing HW assignments in TopHat can be found here Registering for TopHat: Class Attendance and participation: Attendance in lecture is mandatory. We will be using the TopHat (www.tophat.com) classroom response system to submit answers to in-class questions that count toward your participation using Apple or Android smartphones, tablets, laptops, or through text message. You MUST secure a TopHat account to participate in the classwork, HW quizzes, and lecture exams. TopHat will require a paid subscription, and the standard pricing for the cheapest option is $30 for a semester of unlimited access. Before the first class, please download and install TopHat on your cell phone, tablet, computer or similar device. I recommend setting up several devices for the use of TopHat to reduce the likelihood of technical problems. An email invitation will also be sent

If you miss two lecture exams for any reason, you will be dropped with a grade of WU. If you miss more than two laboratories, you will be dropped from the course with a grade of WU. Fieldtrips count as labs. This is a departmental policy, no exceptions. Lateness of greater than 15 mins in lab or lecture counts as an absence for the class. If you miss a lab, you may make it up by asking permission from your own lab instructor FIRST and your host lab instructor! This is the only way we know you will be attending. There are no make-ups for missed lectures. Lecture exams: The 3 online lecture exams are not cumulative and each emphasizes material covered in both lecture and your assigned readings. The exam questions will test your ability to understand the underlying principles and think logically, not just memorize facts. Each lecture exam is comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions that are answered through the proctored TopHat portal. To reduce any temptation for cheating, students activity online will be monitored during the exam. Failure to adhere to the online exam policy will lead to you being suspected of cheating, and you will get a zero. There are no make-ups for missed exams, no exception! More information about taking a remotely proctored test on TopHat can be found here Virtual Tutoring and workshops sponsored by CCAPP: TBA. CCAPP requests that you register online so that we can keep track of usage for funding purposes.
