Body cavities 1. Dorsal body cavity: Protects the nervous system/ 2 subdivisions cranial cavity and vertebral cavity. Brain and skull, spinal cord both cover with a membrane called meninges. 2. Ventral body cavity: 2 subdivisions thoracic cavity, and the abdominopelvic cavity, houses internal organs called the VISCERA (an organ in a body cavity) or visceral organs. The superior subdivision is thoracic cavity surrounded by ribs and muscles of the chest. Thoracic cavity is subdivided into lateral pleural (lungs) cavities and the mediastinum. The pleural cavities contain the lungs, the mediastinum contains the pericardial cavity which contains the heart, and the remaining thoracic organs (esophagus, trachea, etc). thoracic cavity is separated from the more inferior abdominopelvic cavity by the diaphragm. 3. Abdominopelvic cavity has 2 parts the superior parts are the abdominal cavity (superior) and the (inferior) cavity, four abdominopelvic quadrants right upper quadrant, gall bladder, left upper quadrant, stomach, right lower quadrant, appendix , lower right quadrant small intestines. 9 regions of the abdominal cavity: right hypochondriac region, liver gall bladder Epigastric region...
