Summary

This was my book report I did on the book group Wonder....

Description

1. Describe the main characters in your novel. (2-3 sentences per character) August is ten years old. He is very smart/wise when it comes to school. He is the center of his family. Olivia is protective over August. She is understanding of the fact August has special needs. She is sort of independent, and she does not complain. Isabel Pullman is August’s mom. She loves him very much and wants the best for him. She can be overprotective. Summer is the person who August eats lunch with. She seems like an accepting person. Julian is the one who bullies August. He acts one way around the adults and another way when they are not around. Jack is August’s friend at school. Their friendship was ruined by Jack talking about August behind his back. He ends up becoming an honest friend to August. Justin is Olivia’s boyfriend. He loves how close the Olivia’s family is. 2. Briefly describe the plot. (3-5 sentences) The book begins with August being told he is going to public school. He finds out that the person he considered his best friend did not like him. August finds out that same person stood up for him against a bully. He is awarded an award for quiet strength and inspiring kindness. In the end everyone knows him for who he is and not what he looks like. 3. Describe your favorite incident. My favorite incident is when August corrects Julian at the beginning of the book. It shows that even though he was homeschooled he is still smart. 4. What did you gain from the characters experiences? I learned that who we are is more important than what we look like. Reading the story about August and how he overcomes trials, with the help of family and friends really inspired me to accept help in overcoming my own trials. I also learned that a true friend is going to stick by you no matter what you look like. 5. What value does this novel have as a multicultural selection? How would you use it in an elementary classroom? This novel has a lot of value as a multicultural selection. First off, I have not seen many books on special needs. Second, this book shows the experiences of several different people. This allows the reader to see the story from multiple perspectives rather than just one person’s perspective. I would use this book as a way to show my students that we can and show include everyone, no matter what. I would do this by reading along with a paired standard for writing their opinions on the book. Then I would have a discussion with the class about what they learned from the book....
