Element Event
Flow Objects
Connecting Objects
Artefacts: Do not directly affect the sequence flow of the process
A Trigger that starts, modifies, or completes a process Have internal markers (inside circle) to differentiate triggers 3 types of events (depending on how they affect flow): Start, Intermediate, and End
Activity
An Activity or task performed by a person of system Types: Process, sub-process, and task Either unbounded or contained within a pool
Gateway
A Decision point that can adjust the path based on conditions/events. Determines branching, forking, merging, or joining of paths
Sequence Flow
Shows order of activities that will be performed in a process
Message Flow
Depicts messages between two participants that flow across “pools” does NOT connect events or activities within a pool
Association
Swimlanes
Description
Associates an artefact to a flow object
Pool
Major participants within a process. A different pool may be in a different company or department but still involved in the process
Lane
A Sub-partition within a pool that shows the activities and flow of a certain role or participant, who is accountable for parts of a process Used to organise and categorise activities
Data Object
Provide information on an activity and what these activities require to be performed or what they produce
Group (Box around group of objects for documentation purposes
Logical grouping of activities which can be used for documentation or analysis Can be used to identify activities of a distributed transaction that is shown across pools
Text Annotation
Provides further explanation to a part of the diagram for the reader
