(A) Culture jamming is best defined as media hacking. Information warfare, terror-art, and guerrilla semiotics, all in one, who intrudes on the intruders, investing ads, newscasts, and other media artifacts with subversive meanings are all culture-jammers. My culture jam assignment is based on the footwear product, UGGS. UGG boots are a unisex style of sheepskin boot originating in Australia and New Zealand. The shoes are typically made of twin-faced sheepskin with fleece on the inside, a tanned outer surface, and a synthetic sole. Consumers who have bought this product don't think about where precisely the fur in their boots came from. This connects to the sociological perspective. The sociological perspective involves recognizing and evaluating the effects of social relationships and social structures and forces. It is a perspective that promotes critical thinking, the posing of essential questions, and the pursuit of solutions. What consumers would need to take into consideration is where exactly their purchases are from. If consumers were to know the truth behind the product of UGGS, it is most likely that they wouldn't buy the product. UGG boots have become such a trend for young teens and adults. It is known as the must-have footwear. For example, the trend of wearing UGGS in the fall season. With UGGS having many types of different colors, some containing bow ties, they attract a young child to want to own this product. Here is why consumers of the UGG product don't consider to think about the sheepskin. It is not only the UGG product that has hidden consumer secrets; Canada

goose jackets get their product out of real coyote fur. By containing the sociological perspective, we need to pose questions to ourselves, such as where is this purchase from (ask the unasked questions)? We also need to get rid of the social trend that owning UGGS is a need of fashion in our society. The solution is to educate your friends and family about the product. And not just UGGS, this goes for what you purchase. Food(especially fast food), clothing, mundane items, and footwear. If you love wearing boots, consider purchasing cruelty-free products.

(B) I have experienced culture jamming. At a young age, I do question many things because of my curiosity. Aside from me being curious, I also had a love for animals. I was then introduced to PETA when researching animal cruelty in circuses. Families see animals as entertainment and don't think what is happening behind those curtains. Bringing your children to carnivals has become a social norm in society. However, a few years ago, circuses containing animal stunts has limited restriction. When I realized the truth about society's entertainment, I started to question more things. Where exactly is my food coming from? What type of material is in my clothing? I remember when I was too given a pair of UGGS, then immediately disposing of them. I started to do more research on more products. Chapstick and other beauty products, for example, are tested on animals.

I don't believe culture jamming is a deviant act. I believe it informs the consumer about what they are purchasing. It makes the consumer think before buying an item. I see why people such as the owner of the product/company, which is getting critiqued on the product might see culture jamming as a deviant act. They can lose their buyers that consider purchasing the item. However, we need to make people aware of what they are buying and asking the unasked

questions about the product. According to the Book Readings of Sociology, Stuart Ewen and Elizabeth Ewen stated: "To a large extent, this unawareness (The culture of ignorance) is a byproduct of media-driven by market considerations," Chapter 10, Shadows on the Wall. The society needs to develop an awareness of what is being brought to them. This can even include politics, news that is brought to us in the media, culture, and social values....
