Description

Effective VS Ineffective Feedback!

As I have never had a job, I will share helpful and non-helpful feedback I received when I was in school. When I was in the 9th grade, my life started to get hard because of my mother's sickness. That is why I was depressed at that time and was not able to focus on my studies. I remember a situation that happened to me when I presented a presentation to my classmates as my English class project in English class. I didn't present well as I did before because I was sad and anxious. After the class, my teacher gave me effective feedback. She told me that I did very well and my presentation was one of the best, although I know that I did not. Also, she told me that being distracted would not help, and I have to be happy no matter how tough my life gets. She told me that if I want to succeed in my studies and future, I have to be happy because success is not the key to happiness, but happiness is the key to success. This feedback affected my heart and changed me positively because it taught me to always look at life from the bright side, and I started getting back my self-confidence and working hard on my studies. So, this feedback was very valuable and useful because it influenced my studying performance from that moment until now. There was also a situation when I got ineffective feedback from another teacher. At the same period as my mother's sickness, my math’s teacher decided to examine us. Due to the anxiety and the over-thinking, I was not following the classes and trying to understand the lessons, so I did not do very well. In the following week, the math’s teacher started announcing the grades. When he reached my paper, he started to say next to the class that I'm so stupid that I did not get a good grade in such an easy test. The teacher said it augmented my anxiety because he didn't even try to be gentle and give me a chance to explain myself. This ineffective feedback made me hate math’s as a subject, and from that time, I did not do well in math’s. His feedback was not helpful to me because it is ineffective, and it caused me to perform worse in this subject. I can conclude from the situations I passed by that effective feedback's impact on me was positive. Some characteristics of effective feedback are that it "needs to be clear, purposeful, meaningful, and compatible with students' prior knowledge and to provide logical

connections" (Hattie & Timperley, 2007, p.104). The feedback should have a goal, which means that it should be centered on a special single thing. Furthermore, the feedback must be precise and meaningful to understand where exactly they should improve. If I was a manager, I'll make sure that my feedback is on point, referring to work, and use appropriate words, so I don't hurt my employee. Besides, I must also guarantee that I give positive feedback because it motivates any person to do his best. Reference: Hattie, J., & Timperley, H. (2007). The Power of Feedback.
