Description

There are many different “styles” of leadership that have been offered by experts (transformational, democratic, autocratic, pacesetting, coaching, etc.). Investigate the different styles, and write about one style of leadership that currently interests you the most.

When I was just researching on leadership, I came across an interesting definition which states that “leadership in business is the capacity of a company's management to set and achieve challenging goals, take fast and decisive action when needed, outperform the competition, and inspire others to perform at the highest level they can,” (Twin, 2020). When it comes to leadership styles there are four leadership styles which are transformational, democratic, autocratic, pacesetting and coaching I am going to elaborate on each style and also speak more on the leadership style that speaks to me the most which is Democratic Leadership.

With Autocratic leadership the phrase most illustrative of an autocratic leadership style would be “Do as I say," making an autocratic leader one who believes that he or she is the smartest person at the table and knows more than others. They make all the decisions with little input from team members. Authoritative leadership style is best described by the phrase "Follow me," because authoritative leadership style is the mark of confident leaders who map the way and set expectations, while engaging and energizing followers along the way, (Martinuzzi, 2021). Pacesetting is best described by the phase "Keep up!" this style describes a very driven leader who sets the pace as in racing furthermore, pacesetters set the bar high and push their team members to run hard and fast to the finish line, (Martinuzzi, 2021).

A Democratic leader is the "How do you see it?" kind of leader moreover, wherever possible, they share information with employees that affects their work responsibilities and they also seek employees' opinions before making a final decision, (Martinuzzi, 2021). The Coaching leadership style have a "Consider this" approach they are the type of leader who coach and view people as a reservoir of talent to be developed their approach seeks to unlock people's potential, (Martinuzzi, 2021). An Affiliative leader is the "People come first," kind of leader and of all the leadership styles, the affiliative leadership approach is the most up close and personal as it pays attention to and supports the emotional needs of team members, (Martinuzzi, 2021). Furthermore, an affiliative leader strives to open up a pipeline that connects him or her to their team. Laissez-Faire style of leadership which is the opposite end of the spectrum from autocratic as it involves the least amount of oversight while an autocratic style leader stands as firm as a rock on issues, a laissez-faire leader lets people swim with the current, (Martinuzzi, 2021).

After going through all the styles of leadership I would say that the style of leadership that truly resonates well with me is the Democratic style of leadership because it emphasizes the view that leaders offer guidance to teams while taking into consideration the teams’ input as well consideration for their wellbeing especially on issues that directly affect them, (House & Aditya, 1997). What interests me about the democratic style of leadership is that as much as leaders make final decisions, the same leaders encourage feedback and suggestions in order to run the organization more efficiently and with some form of transparency as well. The workforce is highly motivated because they know they’re a part of decision-making and when you have motivated workers this brings about productivity as well as diversity and order because of the free flow of ideas by everyone.

On the other hand, there is also a higher standard of scrutiny because they actually take time to truly analyze before making a decision furthermore, bearing in mind that the more ideas that come from different sources means the possibility of more solutions when it comes to resolving problems. When it comes to democratic leadership what is really apparent is that discussion is the norm as well as being able to effectively communicate, to fulfill organizational goals however, it also creates stronger personal and professional relationships as well. Democratic leadership currently interests me the most as it seems that team members are able to attain a high level of consciousness and work constructively towards the attainment of organizational goals as it fosters positivity, diversity, and a high level of motivation in the organization.
