Garbage Man Questions...
BUSA 2100 Garbage Man questions 1. Can you use the job characteristics model (JCM) to redesign the job of the trash collector to be internally motivating? How? Increasing skill variety, task identity and significance will improve the critical psychological states of employees and help them experience the meaningfulness of their work more, and hopefully improve internal motivation. We can also give them autonomy to give them more freedom of their choices in routes to give them more satisfaction. Improving feedback so that employees can understand the nature of their work. 2. Assume that the trash collection job is not internally motivating. Identify areas where you can strengthen the job’s core characteristics and give specific examples. Skill variety can be increased by malternating task between the pair of employees for each truck. The driver and the thrower will switch jobs every week. We can also rotate truck routes every 6 months for all employees so each pair will run 2 different routes per year. These changes will increase variety and hopefully increase motivation for our employees. Task identity and task significance are already pretty good. Autonomy can be increase by giving employee’s more freedom on how they complete their routes instead of setting fixed routes, but autonomy is already pretty good. Feedback from job can be improved by gathering information and providing as data feedback/results of everyone’s performance from the company (focus on more positive feedbacks instead of negative feedbacks). 3. Is it possible to redesign the very specialized job of a garbage collector to make it more satisfying? Is a redesign feasible? In other words, do you redesign the job or keep it as is? Explain your reasoning. Improve communication between the pairs for each truck, communication between trucks, and communication with headquarter. We can use some sort of radio communication system. This way we can make the day more fun for each pair because they can talk more (assuming they like each other). Communication between trucks may improve performance (information on traffic jams, weather conditions, and other warning of sudden situations). Improved communication will also help individual employees feel more connected and part of a larger team....
