3.4 Learning and teaching in this subject As a first course in finance, this subject emphasises the basic principles of finance and their application in a dynamic world. Whether you work in the field or not, the principles of finance are a valuable tool in the development of your career. Your active participation is crucial to achieving the learning objectives. Assessment items align with the skills crucial to the practice of finance and focus on the four key decision areas in finance – investment decisions, financing decisions, dividend decisions, and risk management decisions. The experience of many students is that a weekly commitment to study is the best way to attain the maximum benefit learning outcomes. One possible way to maintain your study effort is: Read the text chapter(s) – work the examples in the text as you read. These will also be covered in the Lectures at times, so note down any questions or further understanding you may have for your lecturer. Listen to the lecture (face to face or recorded). Do not skip lectures because you may be able to view the recordings. The first four weeks of the subject are foundations for the later material and a failure to gain an understanding of this material will prevent your ability to master the rest of the subject. Engage in the additional materials provided to assist in understanding the foundation concepts of the subject Undertake the Learning modules for Assessment 1 and complete the LearnJCU quiz (3 attempts). This will remain open for the remainder of the semester to enable you to review and practice if you require. Prepare solutions to the set questions / participate in the weekly learning activities Attend the tutorial / join the online tutorial Review the tutorial / solutions & attempt previous exam questions on the topic without reference to your notes Reflect on your application of what you have learned to the assignment issues Lectures Lectures provide the theory of financial decisions needed to solve financial problems. They also highlight the options available in applying the theory to practical situations. Tutorials/Workshops The tutorials and workshops have two important roles. First, they reinforce the theories presented in the lectures by providing practical applications to typical financial problems. Second, they provide building blocks, alternatives, and directions for the group project. You cannot expect to cram for this subject, learning is layered and builds on the prior weeks, so a failure to attend class can be a set back to you achieving the learning outcomes. A self-declaration measure has been put in place to relieve pressure on our medical and counselling services both in the wider community and on-campus during this time. The Notification of Extenuating Circumstances (medical and/or counselling) form is used to advise the University of exceptional circumstances as soon as their impact on your academic performance is suspected. Submission of this form can mitigate the requirement for medical or counselling certificates if you need to apply for assessment extensions, missed compulsory classes, special consideration, and/or deferred exams at any time. The current pandemic crisis places an extraordinary demand on medical and counselling services that students would normally use to substantiate exceptional circumstances that negatively impact their academic experience.

3.5 Student participation requirements Regular engagement with content, subject staff and fellow students is required for all subjects regardless of mode of delivery, i.e. INT, EXT, LTD or BLO. The JCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy (4.3) indicates that, “a 3 credit point subject will require a 130 hour work load of study-related participation including class attendance over the duration of the study period, irrespective of mode of delivery”. This work load comprises timetabled hours and other attendance requirements, as well as personal study hours, including completion of online learning activities and assessment requirements. Note that “attendance at specified classes will be a mandatory requirement for satisfactory completion of some subjects” (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy, 5.10); and that additional hours may be required per week for those students in need of English language, numeracy or other learning support. Note that “attendance at specified online sessions will be a mandatory requirement for satisfactory completion of some subjects” (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy, 5.10); and that additional hours may be required per week for those students in need of English language, numeracy or other learning support. Changes to scheduled Face-2-Face classes due to COVID19 and the move to an online environment: From Monday 30 March, this subject will be moving to an online environment for internal students. This provides us with a unique opportunity to play with the delivery of content in this subject. Instead of a traditional lecture, you will be provided with pre-recorded lecture content. It is expected that you will watch this content prior to scheduled lecture class. This content has been chunked into smaller video and audio podcasts to allow you to watch / listen to it at a time convenient to meet your learning needs. The lecture time will be used as a workshop where we will work through activities designed to engage you in the subject content and practicing the skills we are developing. The workshop class will be held online using collaborate during the lecture time scheduled in the timetable. To access the online collaborate room for the workshop, click on the ‘Subject Room’ in the left-hand menu on LearnJCU. A room will be created for each workshop class for the remainder of the semester. The collaborate room for the workshop will open to student access 15 minutes prior to the ...
