Kiesh Easterwood 10/2/2019 Chapter 6 Reflection - Horney

Importance of childhood experience: - Childhood is where most problems arise - Childhood experiences are causes of neurotic tendencies in the future - Horney also believed that we have the capacity to consciously shape and change our personality. Because human nature is fl exible, it is not formed into immutable shapes in childhood. - Basically it isnt’t determinism from childhood treatment… yet the cognitions without awareness - Children repress hostility due to guilt, no awareness, internalizing tendencies, fear, doubt of self as child (accident, or parent turmoil) can cause relational problems in the future - These parental behaviors include obvious preference for a sibling, unfair punishment, erratic behavior, promises not kept, ridicule, humiliation, and isolation of the child from peers. Horney suggested that children know whether their parents’ love is genuine. False demonstrations and insincere expressions of affection do not easily fool children -
