This course fulfills both the Quantitative Information (QQ) and Mathematical or Formal Reasoning (QR) learning goals of the SAS Core Curriculum: QQ: Formulate, evaluate, and communicate conclusions and inferences from quantitative information. QR: Apply effective and efficient mathematical or other formal processes to reason and to solve problems.

Textbook

Calculus, Single Variable: Early Transcendentals (3rd edition), Briggs, Cochran, Gillett, and Schulz. Pearson, 2018. (ISBN: 978-0134766850) All students are automatically signed up for the First Day Program, which adds a charge ( 65) for the required MyLab Math license to their term bill. This license includes access to a copy of the e-text. If you wish to buy a physical copy of the textbook, you may buy the textbook directly from Pearson for an additional 40. Students are expected to attend all classes; if you expect to miss one or two classes, please use the University absence reporting website to indicate the date and reason for your absence. An email is automatically sent to your instructor. Note: Students who must miss an exam must notify Dr. G as soon as possible. Makeups will be offered only in the case of a compelling reason. (Makeups will always be offered in the case of absence due to religious observance.)

Health & Safety

Masks must be worn by all persons on campus when in the presence of others (within six feet) and in buildings in non-private enclosed settings (e.g., common workspaces, workstations, meeting rooms, classrooms, etc.). Masks must be worn during class meetings; any student not wearing a mask will be asked to leave. Masks should conform to CDC guidelines and should completely cover the nose and mouth. Each day before you arrive on campus or leave your residence hall, you must complete the brief survey on the MyCampus Pass symptom checker self-screening app. See the Community Safety Practices for more details.

Lectures Grading

Homework: You must sign up for MyLab through the MyLab & Mastering tool within your course’s Canvas site. You may access your MyLab assignments directly through Pearson’s web site or through Canvas. Recitation Activities: Each week you will be responsible for completing one or more learning activities based on the content covered in recitation. These activities may vary from week to week, but they will usually consist of a 25-minute timed quiz. You will be given at least 24 hours to complete the quiz, and the quiz will be given via MyLab.
