Office hours of the teaching assistants will be posted early in the semester. We urge you to use these scheduled times to discuss the techniques and experiments with any CHE 327 staff member. Course Description: This is a one-semester, 2-credit course that provides an organic laboratory experience. It includes techniques of isolating and handling organic substances, as well as biological materials. The lecture will be synchronous and will be uploaded to the blackboard for those who are registered for the online version. The two theory quizzes will be administered in-person for everyone during the scheduled lecture time (Oct 4th and Nov 15th from 11:45-12:40 PM). Labs will be conducted within the course schedule meeting time. Regular announcements will be sent from Blackboard. These will be posted on the course site and will be sent by email. These announcements will include updates made in your electronic lab manual, any new posting in the blackboard site and other important course related information. You are expected to check these announcements regularly and any other announcements made on the blackboard. In-Person Communication: Dr. Hossain will be available at the start of each lab sessions (unless otherwise announced) to take quick questions. This will be the best way for you to clarify anything related to the course. For personal/private issues, email Dr. Hossain directly to set up a meeting.

CHE 327

Fall 2021

You are encouraged to attend Professor Parker's office hours regularly since this will be the best way to communicate any concerns you have regarding the course lecture. Attend the graduate TA office hours for general lab related questions. You are allowed to go to any graduate TA’s office hour, not just your own.

Lab Safety, PPE and Required Electronic Lab Manual/Notebook: Face Masks/Coverings: Everyone participating in this class, must wear a mask/face covering at all times. Any student not in compliance with this will be asked to leave the class. ● CHE 327 Electronic Lab Manual Fall 2021 edition. This will be purchased electronically from the LabArchives, which comes as a bundle of an Electronic Laboratory Manual and Notebook (ELN). To sign up for CHE 327 ELN, please visit the link: https://mynotebook.labarchives.com/self_signup/ MjQ0NjQuN3wwLzE4ODE5L0NvdXJzZS83MTQzNjQxMTh8NjIxMDIuNw== You must purchase the ELN before the first day of classes to submit assignments. You must use your stony brook email address to sign up for the ELN. Once you receive access to your ELN, you must purchase it to use the ELN. ● Splash resistant Safety goggles that follow the latest Z87.1 Standard for Occupational and

Educational Eye and Face Protection established by ANSI. Make sure that the google you purchase prevents splash and not safety glasses. You are expected to have your own goggles during the first in-person lab. ● Heavy-duty gloves. Lab Safety Supply Neoprene Gloves are recommended as they resist a

broad range of organic and inorganic chemicals. Playtex Living Gloves are also satisfactory and probably the cheapest available. They can be found at a grocery store or home improvement store. ● Nitrile gloves (not required but recommended). Disposable gloves to keep your hands clean

when conducting experiments. They can be found at any superstore or home improvement store. ● Combination padlock. This will be used to lock your lab drawer. A padlock requiring a key to

open it will not be accepted. ● Appropriate clothing for the lab. You should wear clothing and shoes that will cover your entire body. Do not wear clothing made of synthetics as these may dissolve or degrade if exposed to organic solvents. You will be provided a lab coat during check-in, which you will be required to wear during the lab. The specifics are covered in the lecture/safety video. Failure to adhere to the personal protection safety rules will result in an automatic absence and/or grade penalty.

● Read the Laboratory Safety Chapter (Chapter 1 from the introduction in your Lab Manual sections folder) for more on safety.

Email: Your Stony Brook University email must be used for all University-related communications. You must have an active Stony Brook University email account and access to the Internet. All instructor correspondence will be sent to your SBU email account. Plan on checking your SBU email account regularly for course-related messages. To log in to Stony Brook Google Mail, go to http://www.stonybrook.edu/mycloud and sign in with your NetID and password. If you use Blackboard’s email tool from the course site, it will automatically include your full name, course name and section when you send an email. If you are not emailing using your blackboard, make sure to include this information in your subject. Please allow between 24-48 hours for an email reply.

Technical Requirements: This course uses Blackboard for the facilitation of communications between faculty and students, submission of assignments, and posting of grades and feedback. The Blackboard course site can be accessed at https://blackboard.stonybrook.edu If you are unsure of your NetID, visit https://it.stonybrook.edu/help/kb/finding-your-netid-and-password for more information. You are responsible for having a reliable computer and Internet connection throughout the term. Caution! You will be at a disadvantage if you attempt to complete all coursework on a smartphone or tablet. It may not be possible to submit the files required for your homework assignments. Students should be able to use email, a word processor, spreadsheet program, and presentation software to complete this course successfully. The following list details a minimum recommended computer set-up, and the software packages you will need to have access to, and be able to use: ● ● ● ● ● ●

● ● ● ● ●

PC with Windows 10 or higher (we recommend a 3-year Warranty) Macintosh with OS 10.11 or higher (we recommend a 3-year Warranty) Intel Core i5 or higher 250 GB Hard Drive 8 GB RAM Latest version of Chrome or Firefox; Mac users may use Chrome or Firefox. Part 2: Course Learning Objectives and Assessments The objective of this course is for students to learn different techniques for isolating and analyzing pure organic compounds in relatively high yield while adhering to safety protocols and maintaining scientific record. Students will be able to follow standard safety protocols of chemical handling and laboratory etiquette. This learning objective is evaluated by assessing the in-person lab technique. Students will learn the skill of recording observations and writing detailed procedures. This learning objective is evaluated by ELN quizzes that assess what they have recorded in their lab notebooks. Upon the completion of this course, students will perform experiments involving standard synthetic laboratory techniques such as small-scale crystallization, large scale crystallization, melting point, solid-liquid extraction, rotary evaporation, liquid-liquid extraction, TLC, microcolumn chromatography, reflux, and distillation. This learning objective is evaluated by assessing the quality of products (both yield and purity) submitted by the students. Students will be able to analyze the purity of products, calculate retention factors, and calculate percent recovery/yield with accuracy. This learning objective is evaluated by assessing lab reports, lecture quizzes, and theory quizzes.
