PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Decreases synaptic transmission in the CNS by affecting sodium channels in neurons.

Therapeutic Use Prevention of seizures. Relief of pain intrigeminal neuralgia. Decreased mania

Complications CNS: SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, ataxia, drowsiness, fatigue, psychosis, sedation, vertigo. EENT: blurred vision, corneal opacities, nystagmus. Resp: pneumonitis. CV: HF, edema, hypertension, hypotension, syncope.

Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity; Bone marrow suppression; Concomitant use or use within 14 days of MAO inhibitors; Concurrent use of nefazodone; OB: Use only if potential benefits outweigh risks to the fetus; additional vitamin K during last weeks of pregnancy has been recommended; Lactation:

Interactions Drug-Drug: May significantlyplevels of nefazodone; concurrent use contra- indicated. Mayplevels/ effectiveness of corticosteroids, doxycycline, felbamate, quinidine, warfarin, estrogen-containing contraceptives, barbiturates, cyclosporine, benzodiazepines,

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Absence or reduction ofseizure activity. Decrease intrigeminalneuralgia pain. Patients with trigeminalneuralgia who are pain-free should be re-evaluated every 3 mo to determine minimum effective dose.
