PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Ranitidine is a competitive inhibitor of histamine H2-receptors. The reversible inhibition of H2-receptors in gastric parietal cells results in a reduction in both gastric acid volume and concentration.

Therapeutic Use Ranitidine is used to treat ulcers of the stomach and intestines and prevent them from coming back after they have healed. This medication is also used to treat certain stomach and throat (esophagus) problems (such as erosive esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease-GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).

Complications

Medication Administration

Stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice, fever chills, cough with mucus, chest pain, feeling sort of breath, fat or slow heart rate, easy bruising or bleeding, problems with your skin or hair

Swallow the tablet whole without chewing. Ranitidine can be taken with or without food. To prevent heartburn and acid indigestion, take ranitidine 30-60 minutes before eating food or drinking beverages that can cause indigestion. Do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours unless directed by your doctor.

Contraindications/Precautions

Stomach cancer, porphyria, liver problems, decreased kidney function • Hypersensitivity to ranitidine or components of the formulation

Interactions

Atazanavir, dasatinib, delavirdibe, erlotinib, itraconzole, ivacaftor, ketoconazole, mesalamine, pazopanib, ponatinib, risedronate

Nursing Interventions Monitor signs of hypersensitivity reactions, including pulmonary symptoms (tightness in the throat or chest, wheezing, cough, dyspnea) or skin reactions (rash, pruritus, urticaria). Notify physician or nursing staff immediately if these reactions occur.
