Description of Skill Emergency procedure consisting of chest compressions often combined with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest
Indications Restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest heart attack, drowning, chocking During cardiac arrest, the heart cannot pump blood to the rest of the body, including the brain and lungs.
Outcomes/Evaluation Patient will be revived from cardiac arrest, with a WNL heart rhythm and respiratory rate. If not WNL, it is stable enough to be transported to a care facility
Potential Complications Cervical spine fracture, Rib fracture

Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Call 911 (if not in a emergent clinical setting) Assess the scene, open airway using head tilt, jaw thrust maneuver, check for breathing and begin chest compressions
Client Education Explain to the client about post-CPR chest pain
Nursing Interventions Stabalize neck, and use just the jaw thrust maneuver to implement rescue breaths until paramedics/RRT arrive.
