CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLAN MAJOR ASSIGNMENT- PROFESSOR KIRAN THAKUR

RAINA THAKER 2024628 HRMT BON SUMMER 08

Introduction Assessing the current situation and skills to plan the future way to achieve the goal can be termed as development plan. Considering the the personal and professional development one can evaluate its career graph similarly by having time constraint as base factor the career development plan can be made. In this report, I am going to briefly present my personal growth roadmap for next five years expecting to spent coming years in Canada. Career Objective The main path in professional life is to get into IT sector once again with the goal of continuously upgrading my skills and knowledge. In my perspective in the field of IT one gets an exposure to new challenges and latest state-of-the-art technology each day, also job responsibilities are not monotonous in nature. Considering the huge umbrella of information and communication technology – ICT, I must narrow down my options. I had experience of test analyst as business user testing with HSBC, which still attracts me to get into IT industry and become analyst. Why Canada for employment? “Employment in Canada rose by 90,000 (+0.5%) in August, adding to an increase of 94,000 (+0.5%) in July. In most Canada’s job gains were full-time positions (+69,000). Employment gains were heavily concentrated in the services-producing sector (+93,000), led by job gains in accommodation & food services (+75,000), and information, culture, and recreation (+24,000). Notably, the construction sector saw job gains (+20,000) for the first time since March 2021.” (O'Doherty, 2021). Assumption: I am assuming the for next five years I am spending and living in Canada and all my report is based on this assumption to build my career plan. “WASHINGTON, D.C., April 13, 2021—For the first time, Canada takes the top spot overall in the 2021 Best Countries Report, a ranking and analysis project by U.S. News & World Report” (Lewis, 2021). There are several factors such as quality of life, social justice, pandemic control, women are viewed as effective leaders and so on are some of the reasons behind selecting this country to grow and settle. Employment Matrix: The employment ability for an individual like me being immigrant is getting much simpler with few initial challenges. Although Canada is currently expecting the fourth wave of COVID-19 pandemic, but Canadian border are re-opening to fully vaccinated international travellers which will instantly boom the economy and more job vacancies. The Canadian government is always in support of Immigrant Entrepreneurs as Job Creators. “The unadjusted (raw) data indicated that average annual net job growth per firm was higher among immigrant-owned firms than among firms with Canadian-born owners, as was the likelihood of being a high-growth firm.” (Picot & Rollin, 2021)

Certification Requirement: Prerequisite for entering to any testing job in Canada one must do ISTQB certification which are conducted with different levels by Canadian Software Testing Board (CSTB). All the relevant information can be found on their website www.cstb.ca. Considering my previous experience, which was with Agile methodology, I would would prefer to start with Foundation Level- Agile tester and finish other advanced level certifications as an when required for maintaining the competitive advantage. (CSTB), 2021). I am planning to appear for this exam in middle of 2023 when I would have finished my MBA. Hence, second half of the year 2023 by that I’ll have clarity on work permit status in Canada. The total cost including training and exam for this certification would be approximately $5,000 considering the current inflation rate 1.69% for the year 2021. Dream company I would like to join Ernst and Young – Canada as my next work organisation. Though I have spent more time with HSBC in past around 9 years which is also a global brand and highly caring about its employee. However, now I want to explore different working environment. Additionally, below are some more facts about ENY. ▪ ENY has been recognized by Great Place to Work in professional services, For Women and in Ontario Province. ▪ Ranked top by LinkedIn and Universum as an exceptional workplace. ▪ They emphasis on working culture, gender diversity and inclusive team who generates innovative ideas. They encourage Experienced, Student and entry-level programs to bring distinct permutations and combinations to build their organisational structure. Lastly, one of their visions which has lured me as a potential employee is that they believe in the motto - “We invest in your growth, you personalize your development”

Current action plan

As mentioned above my career plan for next five years is already on its way since Jan 2021. I was living in Australia and realised to transform my career graph and decided to come her which was little difficult due visa and travel constraints. Though I manged to get admission soon in April 2021, I travelled and joined my first semester July 2021 for MBA at University Canada West. My next milestone will be achieved by end of next year in Dec 2022, during which I am planning to do part-time job and try to make connections via Linked other modes such as on job, while traveling and so on. Then in year 2023, my aim would be to get valid work permit RAINA THAKER

and simultaneously do the ISTQB certification so that I can get Job as Test analyst. Once I am certified tester, I would look for full-time Job in the year 2024 and research little bit about starting my own IT recruitment agency in BC. Trying to save money while earning in 2024, I would look for opportunities to get registration, rental, and initial settlement of the business by fifth year 2025. Three step action Plan would be – Build Foundation by doing MBA – Networking and upgrading my skills by doing ISTQB certification – Investing and settling new start-up company of my own. Potential Barriers - There are always uncertainties or hurdles which can come across in the plan. We can manage them by making another contingency plan to handle it. First pin down the potential barriers. Changing Job scenarios especially due to COVID-19 such as work from home. Personal issues may rise in between for instance, health related problems, Visa issues and sometime legal issues while getting licence or registration. Market Inflation rates could impact the budget to set-up new venture.
