Expected Pharmacological Action blocks stimulation of beta 1&2 adrenergic receptor sites. Also has alpha 1 blocking activity which may result in orthostatic hypotension.

Therapeutic Use decrease heart rate and BP. improved cardiac output slowing of the progression of HF and decresed risk of death.

Complications Dizziiness, fatigue, weakness, anxiety, depression, drowsiness, insomnia, memory loss, mental status changes, nervousness, nightmares. blurred vision, dry eyes, intraoperative floppy iris syndrome, nasal stiffiness.

Medication Administration PO

Contraindications/Precautions History of serious hypersensitivity reations, pulmonary edema, cardiogenic shock, bradicardia, heart block or sick sinus syndrome. use cautiously in HF, renal impairment, hepatic impariment, DM, thyrotoxicosis.

Nursing Interventions monitor BP and pulse monitor intake and output ratios monitor labs(BUN, ANA, blood glucose)

Interactions General anesthetics, IV phenytoin, diltiazem, and verapamil may cause increase myocardial depression. increase risk of bradycardia with digoxin. Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness decrease in BP without appearance of detrimental side effects. decrease in severity of HF.
