Case Study: Case Study: Building a Better Tomorrow through Strategic Partnerships Florida State College at Jacksonville GEB 1011 November 1, 2021

Overview

Founded in 1876 by Eli Lilly, Lilly is a pharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery, development, and manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs. Lilly continues its mission of creating medicines that make life better by following its core values of integrity, excellence, and respect for people. To extend Lilly’s reach and impact, the company established the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation. The Lilly Corporation and Lilly Foundation had formed alliances and partnerships to improve access to quality healthcare in resource-limited settings (About Lilly 2020). Partnering with Lilly means organizations will have unlimited resources and access to expert scientists recognized worldwide. For more than 15 years, the Lilly Foundation has partnered with AMPATH (Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare) to provide medicines and care to people living in Western Kenya. AMPATH is an Indiana University/Moi University partnership that aids, gives access, and treats patients who are in desperate need of healthcare. AMPATH was initially created in 2001 to take on the growing HIV epidemic in Kenya. Currently, AMPATH's patient care expands beyond HIV and is now Africa's largest, most comprehensive, and successful health care system (Our Story: History 2020). Lilly and AMPATH's alliance started over 15 years ago with Lilly donating shipments of insulin to AMPATH. AMPATH and Lilly transformed into a strategic partnership to help the less fortunate receive the lifesaving care they deserve. According to the Partnership for Quality Medical Donations, "Since 2002, Lilly has committed nearly $150 million in product donations to AMPATH" (AMPATH Lilly Partnership 2019). The partnership began with just donations of insulin, but now Lilly donates a variety of pharmaceutical drugs, treatments, and life-saving medications for diabetes, cancer, and mental health. Through financial donations and product support, Lilly and AMPATH have paved the groundwork to develop a solution to treat and save lives in western Kenya.

Critical Thinking Conversation 1. Research and provide an example of the alliance of two organizations: To start off, any alliance whether it is big or small, for profit or not for profit always works best when there is a shared goal. Once a common purpose has been recognized, this common purpose is what sets the foundation and acts as the glue that will hold this alliance together. The alliance I researched was the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and disaster preparedness education in the United States. Meals on Wheels is a program that delivers meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their meals. The two organizations strategically aligned their sources to support senior citizens in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Together, they combine sources, identify homebound seniors, provide feeding services, and promote disaster preparedness (Meals on Wheels and American Red Cross 2015). 2. Discuss the results of how the alliances work together to make a difference in building a better tomorrow Alliances work together to provide additional assistance beyond what one organization could provide alone. Partnerships and alliances have the unique ability to combine resources and help serve the community at a higher level. By entering an alliance, both organizations offer support, collaboration, exchange of ideas, and find solutions to build a better world not just for our generation, but for generations to come. Share your thoughts, opinions, and any action that you may take to build a better tomorrow based on reflection of your research:

I enjoyed this case study because my research contained details of partnerships with a foundation of integrity, ethics, values, and empathy. It’s important to remember that in order for an alliance to succeed, there must be clear communication between associates is essential. So many business partnerships seem so sterile and robotic with an underlying “If I do this for you, what will you do for me?” mentality. I found Lilly and AMPATH’s alliance refreshing; where the goal was to improve quality of life and ultimately save lives. I can start building a better tomorrow by ceasing the thoughts that I’m only one person and I can’t change anything. If every person thought that, nothing would get done. This case study reminds me that I need to be more empathetic and generous and keep practicing my social responsibility to society.
