EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A company that had been chosen as our case study is Matech Engineering & Construction Sdn. Bhd. It was established on 19 December 2012 and their head office is located in Skudai, Johor. The enterprise currently operates in the Construction of Buildings sector. From this case study, we are able to obtain the problems that are frequently faced by the company. The company performance is an important element in order to attract clients to use the services provided by the company. Usually, clients will analyze the performance of the previous project that had been held by the company before appointing a company to be involved in their project. The excellent previous project performance can increase customer confidence towards the company in giving the project to them. Besides, the input that can be obtained from this study is to be able to know about the organizational structure, products, business, marketing and operating strategies of this company. The lack of marketing strategies would cause this company to be less well known by other clients. Furthermore, the management system of a project should be improved in order to enhance the company performance. All these weaknesses can be identified by SWOT Analysis by analyzing the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of the company. Hence, any problems that may affect the performance of the project can be resolved. At the end of this case study, we will discuss and provide several suggestions or recommendations to solve the problems faced by the company.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This chapter will be briefly explained about the background of the study, problem statement and purpose of the study.

1.1

Background of the Study

ENT600 is an entrepreneurship subject that needs to be taken by the UiTM students irrespective of their courses. This subject will teach the student on how to start and run their own business. The purpose of this research is to conduct a case study by choose one company and investigate the problems of their products, or services. Company is firm that create by entrepreneur, entrepreneur is person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. Then, students analyze the problem systematically and develop a technology solution to the problems by using creative thinking skills. Students need to create a new or innovate existing products or services after evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of the decision. This is the chance to expose students to the business orientation as they will experience throughout the learning process. Students are required to collect data as much as possible by doing observation, personal interview or reading research. These information are important as students can really understand the problems that company faced. The benefit of this case study is student will be more creative, knowledgeable in conducting business and improve their communication skills. Throughout the process, students will learn about entrepreneurial technology ventures and running a sustainable business, including challenges and achievements. In addition, students will learn how a company operated their business, the hierarchy in the organization, company strategies to market their products and how they manage their financial flow. Thus, this case study such a great medium to learn and take it as guidelines when conducting business. The main body of this report contain information about the selected company, problems that they faced and description of the idea to mitigate the problems. This proposal consists all the information regarding the company business and current situation as a guideline to manage and guide our business efficiently and running smoothly. Moreover, this case study also examines about strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threat (SWOT) of selected company and mainly discusses the problems and solutions to them. Furthermore, 7|Page

students able to learn the entrepreneurship knowledge from experience of another entrepreneur. This is the great chance for students to grab the knowledge and skills for future benefit and encourage entrepreneurial success.

Problem Statement The purpose of this case study is to expose students to the real business in current

industry. Being in business industry, there are many things that students can learn and experience. Firstly, what are the essential entrepreneurial skills that an entrepreneur must have. As we know, to be an entrepreneur, there are many challenges that must be faced and problems that need to overcome. Hence, students learn how make a smart decision, being a good team leader and improve entrepreneurial skills. Secondly, what is the step to running the business successfully and their strategies. For example, know how they do marketing for their products or services, how they manage cash flow and how they manage their organization. Thirdly, in this current 21st century, technology has revolutionized the world and in keeping with the development of technology, however students these days are still lacking in entrepreneur knowledge. In order to solve the problem, we are given this case study to investigate the problems and solve it as entrepreneur in terms of technology. Fourth, what is the strength, weakness, opportunities, and threat that the company faced. Therefore, SWOT analysis need to be done, to gain better understanding while do the innovation of the products. Lastly, how can entrepreneurial skills important to achieve success in business. For example, the soft skill of sales goes together with the communication necessary to be successful. By employing effective communication skills, sales skills, a deep focus, and a high ability to learn, an entrepreneur can learn a business strategy on the fly. Often, entrepreneurs achieve success in their businesses through their own sheer strength of will.

Purpose of The Study The main purpose of this study is to get all the details about company and their products

or services. Then, detect any problems or flaw about their and team member will discuss and come up with the best implementation of our innovations. This study focuses on development of skills, communication, teamwork, or attributes that enable the realization of opportunity. Entrepreneurship education serves as an excellent foundation for the types of creative, innovative ideas we need to achieve. Besides, students can learn from different social and economic backgrounds because it teaches students to cultivate unique skills and think outside the box. Moreover, students will improve their skills and knowledge to come up with business ideas and develop their own. On the other hand, students will also learn about business study 9|Page

such as sales, marketing, sales, management and deepen their understanding. Therefore, skills that will be gained can apply to all area of field of works and do not kill creativity or block opportunity to a specific career as it is relevant in any field.

2.0 COMPANY INFORMATION

2.1 Background

MATECH Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd is an enterprise currently operates in the Construction of Buildings sector which based in Skudai, Johor. The company has been established since December 19, 2012 which has provided their capabilities in structure and civil work, mechanical work, piping work, plant maintenance services and supply of material. The company has been growing with 8 years of experiences in construction sector and they have managed many projects ranging from constructing a building, supplying materials and maintaining services.

2.2 Organizational Structure

2.3 Product/Services Product is a physical item that is put on the market for acquisition, attention, or consumption, while a service is a non-physical item, which arises from the output of one or more individuals. Products and services are closely aligned because both of it are the main elements that a company runs and offers for profit. Therefore, all companies should give the best product and services for all their customers. Below are the services available in MATECH Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd:

1. Structural and Civil Work Structural and civil work is all about designing, constructing, and maintaining the physical and naturally built environment such as bridges, roads, drainage, and buildings. The company can design any structure in a way that it is able to support itself successfully along with resisting loads. There are many construction projects that the company had involved as for instance, constructed a school hall, fencing, office and classroom.

Figure 2.2: Construction of School Hall 2. Mechanical Work Mechanical works are usually responsible for the heating or cooling systems, refrigeration, piping, and plumbing of a building. However, this company focusing more on piping work and fabricating work where one of the projects that the company had done is the fabrication and installation of platform and ladder. The platform and ladder were produced for Petronas, which is for SAMUR Project at Sipitang, Sabah and the client for this project is OGPP Engineering Sdn Bhd.

Plant Maintenance Services Plant maintenance are necessary to ensure all the machineries, parts & types of equipment are in good operating conditions to avoid production stoppage and loss. The maintenances are also essential to always improve the productivity and to improve quality of the product. This company had involved in installation of new tanks for powder plant in Johor where the client of the project is JB Cocoa Sdn Bhd.

Supply of Material The capabilities of the company are not only cover structure, civil and mechanical work but this company also supplying materials to their clients. The company can provide the customers with the widest range of industrial supply, home improvement and construction products. Other than that, the company is also one of the steel suppliers where they have supplied and installed box park for B5 Street Market, Johor.

2.4 Technology Technology is the techniques, skills, methods or processes used in order to produce goods or services which is essential in our life. Technology also can be the knowledge of techniques and processes or it can be embedded in machines to allow for operation where the machines can perform more tasks in less time compared to human. This company does not produce any technologies as their products, but they used technologies in software that made all the works easier rather than using manual system. For instance, the company used Microsoft Project and AutoCAD in order to manage their projects.

1. Microsoft Project Microsoft Project has many advantages where it is designed to provide organizations and teams with efficient tools to better manage their projects. The software also can be used to assists the managers in developing plans, assigning tasks to members, tracking the progress of tasks and organizing work and manpower. Other than that, the software also has Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) functionality where managers can key - in all the tasks for a project and assign to specific individuals. The software also has their own calendar so that all the users can see the progress of the project itself.

2. AutoCAD AutoCAD is one of the most widely used design software where it has been a pioneer of the 3D design industry. AutoCAD’s versatile tools and brilliant consumer strategy make it one of the most valuable tools that engineer can have. Similar with Microsoft Project software, AutoCAD also has many advantages where it can make the design process easier. It is because the software 15 | Page

has many features that the users can draw accurately. Comparing to manual design, the software AutoCAD makes the users can save more time in designing process of one project where this allows the users to finish the project as quickly as possible.

2.5 Business, marketing, operational strategy Matech Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd is one of the leading specialists in mechanical and civil work in its industry. The company is known for their excellent job in mechanical and civil work such as piping and structure work and aims to deliver the highest level of service and become the preferred contractor ...
