Eterniti Claggett ENH 260 10 September 2019 Caught Between Two Worlds

Ceremony is about Tayo, an army veteran who struggles with memories of World War II and memories of his home in Laguna on the Pueblo Reservation. The only thing that can stop the horrific dreams that he has been having are imagining the image or a deer or for others as he mentions, alcohol. After going back to his Grandmother’s house, he meets with an Indian doctor, Old Ku’oosh against the judgement of his aunt. With this man he learns that those who have killed in the war must perform certain ceremonies so that they aren’t plagued with dreams at the wrath of K’oo’ko. These ceremonies or rituals include flute and dancing, blue cornmeal (which his grandmother does feed him), and hair-washing. Ceremonies are not just senseless dances and expressions of praise. For the Pueblo people it is a means to cure the bodies as well as the land. This much is expressed at the beginning of the section....
