Description

Ch. 16 – Atypical Sexual Behaviors What Constitutes Sexual Behavior? 

Sexual behaviors that have been labeled as deviant, perverted, aberrant, or abnormal

Paraphilia  Term used to describe uncommon types of sexual expression o Literally means “beyond usual or typical love” o Not a disorder in and of itself, but will be labeled a disorder if they cause impairments to the person manifesting them or if they cause harm to others

Noncoercive Versus Coercive Paraphilia 

Noncoercive paraphilia do not violate a person’s basic rights because it often does not involve another person or is between two consenting adults. o Often seen as benign or harmless

Coercive paraphilia may cause harm or are invasive to unwilling recipients o May cause psychological trauma o Illegal acts o Many authorities see them as minor sex offenses because many do not involve physical or sexual contact 

AKA, nuisance offenses

Noncoercive Paraphilia Fetishism 

A sexual behavior in which a person obtains sexual excitement primarily or exclusively from an inanimate object or a particular part of the body

Leather is a very common fetish object

Only occurs when the focus is on the object and everything else is tuned out

Occurs when the object is incorporated in fantasy or when reinforced with masturbation, or even childhood o Symbolic transformation

Those with fetishes may commit burglary to support their fetish

Transvestic Disorder 

When someone puts on clothes of the opposite sex to pleasure themselves o Just admiring the clothing would make it a fetish so it must be PUT ON

Used to be labeled as transvestites

A momentary activity that produces sexual excitement that often culminates in gratification through masturbation or sex with a partner

Common in married men with predominantly heterosexual orientations

Sexual Sadism and Sexual Masochism 

Sadomasochistic (S/M) Behavior  The association of sexual expression with pain and power dynamics o Can also be known as BDSM  Bondage-domination-sadism-masochism o Often expressed with women o Viewed in a highly negative light in Western societies

Sadism and masochism are distinct behaviors

Sexual Sadism  The act of obtaining sexual arousal through giving physical or psychological pain

Sexual Masochism  The act of obtaining sexual arousal through receiving physical or psychological pain o Pain must be associated with a staged encounter whose express purpose is sexual gratification o Bondage  Being bound, tied up, or otherwise restricted

“Safe, sane, and consensual”

Desire dominance/submission and not pain most of the time

Allows men and women to escape cultural norms and scripts by reversing the typical roles

Other Noncoercive Paraphilia 

Autoerotic Asphyxia  A rare and life threatening paraphilia in which the individual, almost always a male, seeks to reduce the supply of oxygen to the brain during a heightened state of sexual arousal o Use chains, leather belts, ligatures, or rope nooses pushed against the neck o White males o Sometimes attributed to suicide

Klismaphilia  Unusual variant of sexual expression in which an individual obtains sexual pleasure from receiving enemas (liquids or gas in the anus)

Coprophilia  Sexual arousal from contact with feces, defecating on someone, or watching someone defecate

Urophilia  Sexual arousal from urinating on someone or being urinated on

Coercive Paraphilia Exhibitionism 

The act of exposing one’s self to an unwilling observer

Indecent exposure

Almost always male to a woman or girl

Often shy, nonassertive people who feel inadequate and insecure and suffer from problems with intimacy

Respond by calmly ignoring the exhibitionist and going on with your day, do not react and distance yourself before/while calling the police

Obscene Phone Calls

Telephone scatologia

Sometimes seen as a subtype of exhibitionism

Experience sexual arousal from horrified responses and masturbate during or after “successful” calls

Voyeurism 

Deriving sexual pleasure from looking at the naked bodies or sexual activities of others (strangers), without their consent

Difficult to draw the line since so many sex sites are online

o Must be preferred over sexual relations with another person or indulged in some risk 

Young men in their early 20s

Peeping Toms

Other Coercive Paraphilia 

Frotteurism  Fairly common, but unnoticed practice done by males who obtain sexual pleasure by pressing or rubbing against a fully clothed female in a crowded public place o Between man’s penis and woman’s butt or legs o He may also touch her in inappropriate areas “toucherism”

Zoophilia  Sexual contact between humans and animals o Bestiality

Necrophilia  Having sexual gratification by viewing or having sex with a corpse o Men who dig up freshly buried corpses or who work in morgues or funeral homes...
