1. What are the basic responsibilities of the executive housekeeper in the budget process?  The executive housekeeper is involved in the planning process that leads to the formulation of the budget. (Entails informing rooms division manager and general manager what expenses the housekeeping department will incur in light of forecasted room sales)  Ensures that the department’s actual expenses are in line with budgeted costs and with the actual occupancy levels. 2. What is the difference between a capital budget and an operation budget?  Capital Budget: Plans for the expenditure of company assets for items costing $1,500 or more  Operation Budget: Forecasts revenues and expenses associated with the routine operations of the hotel during a certain period.  The difference is capital plans and operational is a forecast. 3. Why is forecasting occupancy levels such a critical part of the budgetplanning process?  The budget is expressed through the level of service the hotel will provide and how the hotel will be reflected 4. How can the operating budget be used as a tool to control expenses?  The operating budget is a very valuable control tool. It can be used to monitor a course of operations during a specified period so you would be able to see/control expenses. 5. What is the relationship of an operating budget to an income statement?  Operating budget forecasts revenues and expenses.  Income statement identifies revenues earned and itemizes expenses incurred during that accounting period.

6. What are some of the typical expenses (or line items) an executive housekeeper might encounter when preparing the departments budget?  Salaries/wages, employee benefits, commissions, contract services, Guest Supplies, Laundry and Dry Cleaning, Linen, Operating Supplies, Reservations, and Uniforms. 7. What two factors can help the executive housekeeper predict a certain level of expense for each expense category?

The Executive housekeeper can predict level of expense for each expense category when he/she knows: The cost per occupied room for each category of expense The number of occupied rooms forecasted for each budget period.

8. What are the four basic methods an executive housekeeper can use to control expenses?  Accurate record-keeping  Effective scheduling  Careful training and supervision  Efficient purchasing 9. What basic responsibilities does the executive housekeeper have in terms of purchasing operating supplies?  Executive housekeeper needs to know how to obtain the best value when purchasing the department 10. What types of situations should be assessed when deciding whether to use outside contractors for cleaning services?  The decision as the weather the initial investment is possible and worth the monthly savings.

1.) I believe they need to start communicating so they all are on the same track. Like at The Kirkwood Hotel, if each staff member had a walkie-talkie they could communicate through them and if they all had the list of rooms they could stay on track.

2.) They need to stop playing the blame game and accept their mistakes. They could start having daily meetings before they started their first tasks in the morning. By doing this they will be on the same page at the start of the day. They also need to have a plan on how to get customers to come check out of the hotel before leaving so it doesn’t cause so many problems.

3.) I think they need someone to check through all rooms before the customers check into them to make sure they are cleaned and ready to go. They could try asking customers what day they plan on checking out and make sure they check out at the front desk. If you asked guest to return the keys to the front desk it might help with knowing when they checked out....
