What do you think Psychology is? When I see the word “psychology”, I think about various cognitive studies. Psychology is the study of the human mind or, in some cases, the minds of animals. Like many other fields of science, there are a ton of different methods used to study the brain and why it works the way it does. 1. In 1910, a new study of psychology was created called Gestalt psychology. Gestalt psychology is the study of how we perceive everyday things. This approach is interesting because perception is a common way of how everyone sees the world. When asking someone how they view something, a psychologist could take that information and analyze their viewpoint based on outside factors like home-life, friends, genetics, etc. The Psychodynamic Approach makes the most sense to me. In this approach, psychologists root their studies in the subject’s childhood. Childhood is the most influential period of a person’s life, so it would make sense that we learn our behaviors and personality traits from that period.

2. Experimental Psychology is interesting because they find new innovative ways to study the brain and why we are the way that we are. It would be a challenge which is something that attracts me to this particular field. Developmental Psychologists focus on the way we grow and change across the lifespan. My personal belief is that we are molded into who we are as people from childhood, so this speciality makes sense to me. Personality Psychology is grounded in the research about what makes up everyone’s unique personalities. Personalities have hundreds of factors surrounding why we act the way we do, so this particular field is extremely interesting to me simply because I am curious about our unique personalities.

3. Can people actually sense danger? There are plenty of times when we hear someone say “I feel like I’m being watched” or “I have a bad feeling about this person”. Can people actually sense these things or is it anxiety talking for them? Case Study: Study someone who has an extreme case of paranoia vs someone who has little to no paranoia. Put them in situations in which someone may be watching them.

Survey Method: Gather information from these people by asking them how many times a day do they feel that they are in danger. Naturalistic Observation: Simply observe the difference between paranoid vs non-paranoid people in their everyday lives. Correlational: Examine the outcomes of paranoid people in situations where they are in danger versus when they aren’t in danger and see their reactions to both.

4. Psychology is an ever changing field of research that requires the close observation of people and/or animals. Regardless of this fact, it is of the utmost importance that their subjects of research feel physically and mentally safe. This is the code of ethics that all psychologists follow and continue to follow, as they should. Following this code of ethics, psychologists will have their subjects sign consents to make everyone completely aware of what the research entails and what will happen as they continue. Finally, psychologists want to make their subjects personal information completely confidential. To proceed in any research method, people should feel physically safe, mentally safe, and their personal information should be protected from being leaked out into the world for everyone to read about.

What do you think Psychology is after reading the textbook? Psychology is the study and close observation of how the brain works and why it could possibly work this way. Studying behavior involves theories, studies, and subjects. There are many ways to tackle cognitive studies and psychologists spend their days figuring out which one is best to use in their field of study....
