Chapter 11 DEFINITIONS 1. Basal/anthology reading program – a comprehensive program for teaching reading that includes readers or anthologies that gradually increase in difficulty, teacher’s manuals, workbooks, and assessment measures 2. Literature based approach – a program that uses sets of children’s books as a basis for providing instruction in literacy; teachers choose the books 3. Core literature - literature that has been selected for a careful, intensive reading; often read by whole class 4. Text sets – groups of related books 5. Individualized reading approach – a system of teaching reading in which students select their own reading material, read at their own pace, and are instructed in individual conferences and whole class or small group lessons 6. Reading workshop – students choose their own books and have individualized or group conferences, but may meet in groups to discuss books or work on progress 7. Dialogue journal – a journal in which the student reacts to or makes observations about reading selections and teacher responds by writing in the journal 8. Language-experience approach – students dictate a personal experience; story is used in instruction; ex. Shared writing and interactive writing Literature-Based Programs  Core literature – allow to read ahead if they want to  Text sets  Thematic units or transactional o Theme based on units o Begin with over plan  Subject to modification  Books to meet needs and interests but may be misused Suggested Procedure for Thematic Unit 1. Select topic or theme you wish to explore a. Must be important part of curriculum 2. Involve students in planning 3. State overall ideas you wish to emphasize 4. Decide on reading materials and activities 5. List and gather resources 6. Plan a unit opener 7. Evaluate Individual Conferences  Questions to put at ease, get a general sense of understanding  Elicit personal response  Clear up difficulties and build comprehension  Ability to apply strategies and skills taught  Students choose favorite part to read and personal assessment of the book and what they learned  Encourage to keep a journal of all books read Group Conferences  Discuss books by the same author, common theme, same genre  3 types of questions
