Types of Interpersonal Conflict
Pseudo Conflict: teasing,
Fact Conflict: about facts
Value Conflict: differences in moral beliefs (agree to disagree)
Policy Conflict: disagreements over plan or idea
Ego Conflict: disagreement over who is the “winner”
Meta Conflict: conflict about how you’re having a conflict
Styles of Managing Conflict
Withdrawing: leaves o “I don’t want to talk about it”
Accommodating o “Getting my way isn’t as important as keeping the peace”
Competing o “I’ll get my way regardless of what I have to do”
Compromising o “I’ll get part of what I want, and other people also have part of what they want”
Collaborating o “Let’s talk this out and find the best solution for both of us” o Taking the time to dig into issue and both partners feeling like they won
Face Negotiation in Conflict
Face Negotiation Theory o Self-Face Orientation: inclination to uphold and protect our self-image in interactions o Other-Face Orientation: inclination to uphold and protect the self-images of our partners and other people affected by the conflict, even at the risk of our own face
Destructive Conflict Patterns
Principle of Negative Reciprocity o Serial Arguing: partners argue about the same issue 2 or more times o Counterblaming: accusing person of same thing you’re being accused of o Cross-Complaining: one argument leads to many o Demand-Withdrawal: one person complains, and the other withdrawals can turn into a serial argument o Mutual Hostility: louder verbal abuse back and forth (traditional fighting)...
