Description

1. Larry is rewarded for getting suspended because he does not have to go to school, does not receive any punishment at home, and is allowed to do whatever he wants as a “reward” for getting suspended. Larry is given a punishment that has a reinforcement error that will lead to Larry to continue to do the same negative behavior. Larry is the one that is in control of the punishment and not the teacher because his actions have led to the immediate reaction he is looking for. 2. No means no requires the teacher to have a plan. The student who is causing issues has a plan for how to cause the issues. Teacher must have a plan to deal with this behavior and it needs to be consistent. If a teacher says no to one students it needs to be a no to all students in the same situation. Teachers must “not listen to yammering” because yammering does not result in a production discussion. If teachers allow the student to just walk all over them then you are demonstrating you cannot handle the student. 3. Teacher continually face difficult days and feeling of overwhelmed because they do not manage their days. Getting to the fight-flight stage is not natural for humans and if teachers do this repeatedly then it is unhealthy for them. Teachers who do not have effective management plans are more likely to reach the fight-flight stage and therefor are more likely to have higher stress at the end of the day. 4. Downshifting involves our brain to go to a more primitive version of itself. It increases the likelihood of us having a primitive reaction which in turn leads to having an action that we will later regret. 5. When we are calm we have full power of our emotion. The book does a good job explain that power is all related to control. Our standard emotion is one of calm which means that we are in control of our emotions most of the time. When we are calm you bring wisdom whereas when you are upset your brain downshifts. When you are upset you have allowed something else to be in control of your mind and body. 6. You can avoid the fight-flight reflex by practicing being calm. Having a strategy to deal with emotional situations is important and helps you better control both your responses and your emotion....
