Description

What were the major factors that contributed to the demographic changes in the English colonies during the eighteenth century One of the major factors was the importation of slaves from Africa. Due to the rapid growth of the agricultural economy and plantations, slaves were the main source of labor and when cash crops like sugar and tobacco started to spread and be more lucrative, there was a huge demand for labor that came in the form of slaves and at one point,” the largest number of new arrivals were enslaved Africans who totaled more than all European immigrants combined.”. Another major factor that contributed to the demographic change was the growth of towns and cities. Since the people there were prospering, there were more immigrants from other countries and women giving birth to more children that helped to increase the population. The number of increasing opportunities made America a desirable place to immigrate to and start a new life at and this appealed to the disadvantaged who lived in other parts of the world.

What roles did women play in the English colonies? Women were not expected to be ministers or take positions of leadership in the colonies due to how their culture had depicted them as “a weak creature” and that they did not have the strength of a man. They focused on housewifery which meant that they obeyed their husbands, took care of their children, and maintained their household. They were expected to be the hardest working people in the colonies and that they virtually had no time to rest and they also took on the tolling roles of working in the fields. Sometimes, women were also used for entertainment and this is why some of them became harlots because it was a lucrative job and even though it had its stigma surrounding it, it was an important part of the men’s lives in the colonies. Even though they were not supposed to preach or become ministers, they took up most of the church attendance in a severely disproportionate way.

What were the differences and similarities between the societies and economies of the southern, New England, and middle colonies? The south was heavily based on agriculture and that’s where most of its money came from and in contrast, New England didn’t have a good climate or fertile land so they couldn’t do large scale farming but luckily they were able to make money by making ships and selling them. The middle colonies also used agriculture but instead of focusing on cash crops like the southern colonies, they made more foodstuffs so they could send it to the plantations in the south and the North was also a colony that mostly focused on trading and commerce. Unlike the other two colonies, the middle colonies had a surplus of immigrants from Europe that threatened the influence of the actual people who had an origin that traced back to England. They were all very religious colonies and going to church was an important part of daily life. All the colonies also did things that favored the rich like give them more land, build them bigger manors that looked

over the other smaller manors.

How did race-based slavery develop during the seventeenth century, and in what ways did it impact the social and economic development of colonial America? Race-Based slavery began as an indentured-servitude for Africans and then after their time was up, they would be free but there were no laws that truly defined the term slavery so people started to take advantage of this and make the indentured servitude a lifelong thing. Slaves started slowly losing their rights and instead of being people, they were soon started to be treated as property and it was mostly due to their skin color, which resembled the same color that symbolized evil in colonial culture. The treatment of Africans started to get worse and they were overworked and beaten for making a small mistake, and because of the labor that they provided, the colonies experienced a rapid economic growth that made them a lot of money and the southern colonies were the ones who used the most slaves on their plantations so by selling cash crops, they had acquired a lot of wealth. Slaves started rebelling because they were being treated really bad and because of these failed rebellions, slaves were being even more disrespected and looked down upon.

In what ways did the Enlightenment and Great Awakening shape American thought? The Enlightenment shaped American society by showing the people that there were different ways to worship God and practice a religion. It also gave Americans some freedom in a way because rather than just practice religion in a way due to tradition, it let the Americans choose how they wanted to practice religion. It also made people focus more on themselves and they started desiring more material things like wealth and valuable foreign goods. The Great Awakening was a way to restore the emotional impact that religion had. It was a way that brought people back to religion and it told them that these riches and goods should be devalued. It also put a lot more fear into people because they didn’t want to go to hell so they started attending church more often and they were acting in a way that pertained more to the values that their religions had embedded in them....
