According to the text of the two primary documents, the role that the colonists expected Indians to play in the 18th century colonial society is that they wanted the tribes to form an alliance with them to gain better relations and as well create a common unity amongst one another. Although it may seem like the colonists have good intentions for pursuing an alliance with the tribes, they fully understood that having a strong alliance with the Indians would benefit themselves greatly. For example, Lieutenant Governor William Bull of South Carolina sent a Stono Rebellion Report to the British Board of Trade to inform them of the status of the rebels and the revolt 1. The militia was called in immediately and was able to shut down the horrendous rebellion by executing those who revolted, but some rebels had fled the scene; thus, leading to William Bull’s proposal and suggestion of offering rewards to encourage Indians who would help re-capture the slaves who participated in the revolt. This was deemed as a beneficial circumstance to Governor Bull because this allowed him to set forth preventative measures that could eliminate the same events from developing in the future by persuading the natives to intercept those who might attempt to follow 2 the footsteps of the revolters. Addressing the Albany Congress of 1754, several representatives from different colonies gathered together to discuss the relations with the Iroquois Confederation. 3 Although the congress was to strengthen the relations between the colonists and the Iroquois, they also discussed that there needed to be a cooperation that unified each 1

colony with each other, with the French and Indian War on the rise. It addressed the need for unity because there are some colonies that were likely to be under attacked or invaded such as the Northern colonies that shared a border with a French colony in Canada. 4 Although the Albany Plan of Union was supported by several colonial leaders, the proposal of the Franklin’s plan was not put into action. Some colonial officials did not agree with other colony beliefs (could be religion) and also feared of losing power, territory, and commerce to other colonies and to the British Parliament; which with several speculations, caused the Albany Plan’s failure. 5
