Description

Matthew Holtrop THA 2304 Essay #4 – Treat You Better & Sherlock Jr. There are clear forms of continuity and discontinuity in both the music video, Treat You Better, and the film, Sherlock Jr. The directors use these different forms of editing to create new and unique feelings for the audience to enjoy. In the music video for Treat You Better, it begins with showing you discontinuity and lets the audience foreshadow some events that occur later on in the video. Different scenes are shown throughout the first twenty seconds or so, as well as combining continuity aspects and discontinuity. In these first seconds the director shows scenes of her boyfriend fighting another guy, arguing in the car before she gets out, as well as her casually spending time with her boyfriend. The director continues to cut between the main actress and the singer, Shawn Mendes to signify that they are having two different lives’ but trying to tell the audience that these two need to be together. Showing different parts of the actress’ life with the boy who doesn’t treat her correctly. Continuingly switching to Shawn singing in a room alone waiting for the actress to realize that he is the guy that she needs, hence the name of the song, Treat You Better. As the director continues to change back and forth between actress and singer, you see the couple fight in her room and he violently throws her onto her bed. The director chooses the length of each clip between discontinuity and continuity to show the audience different scenes but not understand fully what is going on with such little information, making the audience to continue to watch the entire video before knowing where each scene takes place. In the film, Sherlock Jr., continuity is used through the whole film besides in a few instances. The film covers a young man who works for a movie theatre and is competing for a woman who him and a similar man share a love for. The film follows the main character, Sherlock Jr., through a regular day which turns out to be one of his least favorite days in his life. As the film continues on, there is a scene change from continuity and discontinuity. The discontinuity scene comes in play when he falls asleep on the job. His imagination allows him to step out of his own body and watch the film as if he is awake. He sees the man who blamed a crime on Sherlock Jr. and decides to go after him. At this time Sherlock Jr. goes onto the stage where a movie is playing and he is allowed into the movie and it seems that he becomes a part of it. While this is all going on, we the audience know that it is actually just a dream and not actual reality. The director uses different shot lengths in the first opening parts of Sherlock falling asleep to show rhythmic relations. Based off the date this film was created, the director had to use many connecting shots to show scene changes, the most popular one he used, was the “cut” method.
