Chapter 4 Synopsis This chapter is about crime and the role crime labs play in. Crime labs uses trace evidence, DNA, and handwriting to find out certain things that has happened during a crime. People who study trace evidence identify the type of evidence was found and if it could be transferred during a crime. Examples of this includes hair, textile fibers, fabric, ropes, leaves, pollen, twigs, and diet. People who study handwriting compare handwriting to data on paper. Examples are handwriting, typewriting, printing, erasers, and impressions. DNA analysis people study body fluids like saliva, blood, semen, and other body fluids. The ballistics unit studies firearms, ammunition, tools, and tool marks. Latent prints are impressions made by the ridges in your fingers. It can come from fingerprints in powder or on glass. The FBI created AFIS which stands for Automated Fingerprint identification system. This system helps with the quality of fingerprints and compares to other fingerprints in the database. The photography unit operates the imaging section like capturing photographs, processing them, producing and analyzing. Fingerprint evidence can help put away a criminal and is substantial evidence that holds up in court. Every person has their own fingerprint and no one else has the same exact fingerprint as well as DNA. DNA is specific to every single person. Transportation and storage are big for fingerprints, DNA and all sorts of evidence. If any evidence is damaged while being transported it’s no longer useful. Investigative Psychology is also a useful took in the crime lab since you can identify certain traits that are specific to certain type of people. This can aid very well in an investigation.
