A synopsis on The Hunger Games + Themes...

Description

The Hunger Games The novel The Hunger Games is based on a fictional world held under control by one main government who forces two individuals from each city better known as a district to participate in an annual battle. Twenty-four teenagers from the ages of twelve to eighteen are involuntarily chosen at random and are sent to an arena in The Capitol to fight to their death with one winner, receiving riches and fame. These annual games are put on and publicized as a source of entertainment for The Capitol and are to show that these twelve districts are at their mercy. There are many themes in the novel The Hunger Games some of which include fantasy, strength, and love. The main characters Peeta and Katniss will be analyzed to prove the following themes.

Fantasy is a theme that includes unrealistic and/or fictional characters, settings, and elements. In the novel The Hunger Games one aspect of fantasy are The Hunger Games itself. The Hunger Games occur every year in order for The Capitol to take advantage of their power. They do so by having these children fight each other to their death while televising it across the districts. The Capitol designs a brand new arena yearly that can be controlled and changed by them at any given moment. An example of this setting in the novel would be described as "a vast outdoors arena that can hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland." (page 22) This is unrealistic because our technology can't control the weather. Another aspect of fantasy in this novel would be the characters attire. This is shown when Katniss and Peeta are introducing themselves as tributes in The Capitol. The novel states "In the deepening twilight, the firelight illuminates our faces. We seem to be leaving a trail of fire off the flowing capes." (page 85) This belongs to theme of fantasy because it is not possible for clothing to be set on fire without causing any physical harm to a person.

Another theme that applies to this novel is love. I think love is a big factor in this novel because most of the things Katniss does is based on love. An example of this is when she volunteers as tribute in exchange for her sister, Prim "I bet my buttons that was your sister. Don't want her to steal all the glory, do we? Come on, everybody! Let's give a big round of applause to our newest tribute." (page 28) This scene takes place right after Katniss volunteers, while she didn't want to volunteer she knew that she couldn’t let her younger sister die. So she was willing to take her place because she loved her. She also shows this love in the way she takes care of Prim while their mother struggles with the death of their father. "At eleven years old, with Prim just seven, I took over as head of the family. There was no choice. I bought our food at the market and cooked it as best I could and tried to keep Prim and myself looking presentable." (page 11) This quote shows how selfless she is and how she will always act in ways that put her sister first. Lastly, the other theme that I believe belongs to this novel is strength. Katniss' strength is not only shown physically but mentally as well. Her physical strength is shown throughout the games as she tries to stay alive. However, her strongest moments are when she is tested mentally and emotionally. The first is when her only ally, Rue, is killed suddenly and Katniss must comfort her until she passes. "Rue's eyes have fluttered shut. Her chest moves but only slightly. My throat releases the tears and they slide down my cheeks. But I have to finish the song for her." (page 284) In this quote it shows that Katniss is clearly upset by the death but continues to sing for Rue. Her strength is tested again when her and Peeta make it to the final two and it's made a rule that one of the two must die in order for them to have a victor. However, Katniss tries something different. ""Trust me" I whisper... I loosen the top of the pouch and pour a few spoonfuls of berries into his palm. Then I fill my own. "On the count of three?""(page 418)

Katniss ignores The Capitol's rules, still finding a way to do what she believes is right in this situation. In conclusions, I think the themes of fantasy, love, and strength are shown throughout many parts of this novel. This novel wouldn't be what it was if these themes were not incorporated in it somehow....
