SLANG AND CLICHÉS

2 Use Slang and Popular Clichés with Caution

Slang and popular clichés such as; LOL, chill, think outside the box, shift the dial, and level the playing field are fun and creative ways to communicate and express thoughts or common ideas (Rentz & Lentz, 2018, p.138), but slang and clichés should be avoided in business communication. The text states that business clichés can sometimes increase credibility with businesspeople and add color to language to convey an idea, but it can also have a negative impact and decrease credibility (Rentz & Lentz, 2018). The use and overuse of slang and clichés in the workplace are unprofessional and can cause confusion and misunderstandings. Regardless of how comfortable one may get; business communication should be upheld in professional grammar and terms to prevent misinterpretation. Advanced technology in the twentieth century, social media, and modern television shows publicize the latest trends which include the forever changing slang and popular clichés. It makes it nearly impossible to avoid hearing and seeing them, but one should know when they are and are not appropriate to use. Slang and clichés are known to go in and out of style just like vehicles, clothes, and hairstyles. An expression used five years ago, may not be interpreted with the same meaning today. Slang and clichés can also be annoying and meaningless (Smith, 2014), to most people in a professional environment. People in the business world often lack the time to decipher what expressions mean, therefore it is important to keep communication clear, concise, engaging, and efficient. Avoid slang and clichés in business writings, use them sparingly, and only in communication with people who will understand and appreciate it (Rentz & Lentz, 2018, p. 138).
