Chapter 9 & 10 

Internet history o In the 1960s, scientists working for the United States Air Force researched ways to make a highly robust network that would continue to work even if part of the network was damaged o Tucson was the biggest target for nuclear war  Had the most nuclear weapons o In 1969, the Advanced Research Project Agency Network made similar networks at UCLA that connected them and would eventually would become to be known as the internet o Until about 1990, there was no common “language” of the internet and it remained the domain of scientists and academicians o Around 1990, Tim Bernrers-Lee invented a standard language of the internet call Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)  Its a weak language o HTML is a platform neutral language which means it will work on all operating systems like Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and UNIX o Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) was developed as a means to transfer information in a standard fashion so all computers on the internet could receive data Internet and World Wide Web Structure o The internet is a “client / server” model o Reduce the internet to 11 computers, 10 clients connected to 1 server. Each of the 10 clients is named 1 through 10, giving it an internet protocol address Internet protocol address o IP addresses are actually a 32 bit number like 129.219.10.58  Protocol “http://” + “129.219.10.58” = “http:// 129.219.10.58” o Websites have addresses called Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) like “http://www.yahoo.com” that mask the IP address o “Http” is a hypertext transfer protocol, “www” is world wide web, “yahoo” is the domain name”, and “.com” is the domain code Common domain codes o .com commercial o .edu educational o .mil military o .gov governmental o .org organization o .net network Websites o Important aspects of websites are  Content (most important)  Interactivity  Design

o Browser application software provides a GUI interface Browser features o Bookmarks o Caching o Cookies  What remembers my personal information o Graphic files o JavaScript o Security o Pop up blockers o Usability Internet service providers (ISP) o Business that provides a way to access the internet. Broadband internet access is a high-transmission rate internet connection. Internet host services hold content on the world wide web Search engines o Top search engines  Google  Bing  Yahoo  Ask  Aol Business website alternatives o Blogs were originally called “web logs” maintained by an individual. In business, blogs can serve to bolster a business’ interests and create more visits to its website Hypertext markup language (HTML) elements o Hypertext is the text on a computer that leads a user to related information while markup language refers to the computer programming. HTML is represented by elements enclosed by (brackets) o Example: Yahoo!  Head elements define the documents’ style like: 

Wood - Wednesday  BETWEEN - includes bounds  Syntax in access is like English and not like Excel  AND - across  OR - down  Process for records must meet all criteria in the first row  Everything in Access is called an “object” o Every “object” has “properties” that describe something about the object
