The Iberian colonizers would hold sway over sprawling American territories with the help of Hegemony and religious authority. They set Hegemony as a way of life or as a system to be ruled by. The lowest class stayed in their inferior positions because they couldn’t voice an opinion and they decided to accept that. Colonizers made rebellions seem pointless and punishable by God and going against the church was considered a crime. 2. What does the term “hegemony” mean in the study of colonial Latin America? Discuss its relation to the caste system. Hegemony is a form of domination that emphasizes a measure of consent by those at the bottom since it did not rely on force. It made this type of domination seem like something normal because once the people at the bottom accepted their inferior position in society they participate in their own subjugation. It hurt those at the bottom. The power formed was powerful and resilient. Everyone accepted the caste system because it was nearly impossible to move up the ladder of authority. It forced people to stay in their place, the bottom will always have to stay at the bottom. 3. Why is transculturation an important concept in Latin American history? The interaction between Europeans, Africans, and indigenous people caused transculturation. These cultures were mixed with one another. Transculturation is the main contributor to the many cultures established in Latin America. Culture defined a person’s status and power in society. Transculturation influenced religion. Slaves kept their African religion but hid it under Catholic views. Indigenous people made their own version of a Catholic icon using their imagery. African cultural practices influenced Catholicism in Brazil and the Caribbean. Cities helped transculturation, indigenous people migrated to urban areas because urban slaves had greater freedom than those in plantations. With rural areas, plantation slaves were highly restricted and isolated. Rural indigenous people lived more separately which influence of African and indigenous culture. Transculturation and hegemony often went hand-in-hand. Transculturation was a good and bad thing for suppressed groups. Nahuatl people appropriated Catholicism as their religion and Iberian domination came to be....
