Description

Chem 123L week 2 Participation Challenge. Unfortunately, I do not have a car and I cannot show this redox reaction happening in front of my eyes, but a redox reaction I want to demonstrate is the transfer of electrons in automobile lead storage batteries. How car batteries work, they are filled with lead (Pb) which act as a reducing agent and lead (IV) oxide (PbO2 ) as the oxidizing agent. In order to produce a current, a redox reaction between lead and lead (IV) oxide occurs, where the wires connected to the batteries pass electron back and forth in order to produce a current. This application can also be applied to normal batteries. A basic battery contains two solution connected by a wire. The solution in one battery can be the oxidizing agent and solution in the other can be a reducing agent. The wires connecting the battery allow electrons to pass back and forth inducing a current.
