Bond Polarity and Electronegativity When two dissimilar atoms form a covalent bond, the electron pair will be unequally shared resulting in a dipole moment a bond in which the two atoms have partial charges. Ex. HI When two atoms do not equally share electrons, one atom has the larger share of electrons (partially negative, d) and the other atom is depleted of the electrons (partially positive, d+) this is called a polar bond. In ionic bonds the displacement of the electrons to one of the two atoms is essentially complete. + and – symbols are written alongside the atoms. Ex. LiF
Electronegativity is the ability of an atom in a molecule to attract electrons to itself.
Which bond listed below is the most polar? C – Cl B – Cl Al – Cl Si – Cl
Molecular Polarity Most molecules have polar bonds, molecules can also be polar. 1. Symmetrical molecules with no lone pairs are always nonpolar 2. Symmetrical molecules with different atoms are polar 3. If one position is occupied by a lone pair in a molecule, the molecule will be polar 4. If there are two or more lone pairs, sometimes the molecule is polar and sometimes it is nonpolar
Decide whether the following molecules contain any polar bonds, then whether the molecule as a whole is polar or nonpolar. NOBr CSe2
SF6
Which of the hydrogen halides is the most polar? A) HF B) HCl C) HBr D) HI
Which molecules listed below is nonpolar? A) BCl3 B) PCl3 C) POCl3 D) SO2Cl2
SeH2...
