CIA – 3 “THE COUNTRY OF NO” 1. Based on your reading of the excerpt, justify the title ‘The Country Of No’. “Country Of The No” written by Suketu Mehta who tried to explain that India is a country of no where you go and ask question every answer will be no and sometimes either no or yes. That no is your test. you have to get past it. It is India’s great wall. Pursuing it energetically and vanquishing it is your challenge. But for ownself one has to work to get that no answer into yes. The title justifies to this extent. with that NO the author is trying to inform that some part of India is yet to developed. where only we can work not any person from another country.

2. According to Suketu Mehta, Bombay is hostile to the outsiders or nostalgia-struck returness. Why does he say so? Explain by describing the experiences that Mehta had in his day to day life in Bombay. Mehta, a Bombay boy who left his home town for New – York at the age of fourteen, returns as journalist at the age of thirty five with his family in Bombay. But the city to which he returned after twenty years has become ‘the country of No’ a big ‘NO’ to outsiders. The city to which he feels so connected considers him as a foreigner. His hometown Bombay which itself is a Reclamied land – land reclaimed by ocean. After shifting to the flat in Bombay the day to day life experiences that author faced after coming back to his hometown was high range flay in Bombay , or rent to having connections. He was not able to find a flat of his own choice because those flats were only for white- skinned foreigner though having a American passport it was not allowed. The only flat he got was ‘cosmopolitan’ locality. Even people walking below or standing in their balconies in the buildings opposite can peep into every corner of the flat. He had to run for small small things just like plimber, electrician or carpenters and asking again and again for the completion of the work. The only way they get air in the living room is to open the study window, lo let the sea air in. But that brings sand dune’s worth of thick , black grainy dirt from outsie, along with a spectacular array of filth and once a shit- stained diape. These were the problems he grew up with. Mehta along with his native landers had to bear inhumane remaks of their fellow New-Yorkers who considers him as a stinking heathen, emitting the foul odour of native....
