Description

CIS Discussion 1 Social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram are popular with millennials whereas Facebook is popular with older people. From my personal experience, I believe this statement to be accurate. I have observed that adults from older generations (e.g. baby boomers) are likely to be more active on social media sites such as Facebook, rather than Instagram or Twitter, whereas the reverse is the case with adults from younger generations (e.g. millennials). I suspect this is the case because older generations tend to use social media more for communication than for content creation and sharing, and platforms such as Instagram cater largely towards users who post videos and pictures of their content (photos, reels, memes etc.). Contrary to my assumption, research reveals that 50% of baby boomers and 57% of members of Generation X use social media to share photos and updates. So if my assumption is incorrect, why is it that Facebook is more popular among older generations, and Instagram and Twitter among millennials? According to my findings, Facebook is the most popular social media platform among millennials, however, Instagram ranks as second. Similar to its popularity with millennials, Facebook is also the most popular form of social media amidst baby boomers. Since boomers are less likely to have multiple social media profiles it makes sense that with Facebook as their top platform of social media, they are less likely to have Twitter and Instagram profiles. Additionally, they are the least likely to use social media through a smart phone; this could explain why they aren’t found as frequently on apps like Instagram, where complete access to the features of the platform are exclusively accessible via mobile device. While selfie culture is prevalent within the millennial generation, the same cannot be said with Generation X, therefore decreasing the appeal of platforms such as Instagram, where selfie culture reigns. While older generations are more likely to use social media to connect with those they know personally, Twitter allows interaction to take place between strangers and friends alike. Hence, Twitter is more popular throughout millennials than any other generation, as they often use the platform to see what other users are talking about, not only those in their circle of friends. The information I discovered rejects my initial supposition, but it does support part of the allegation that states Facebooks popularity is prominent amidst older generation, while the same cannot be said for Instagram ad Twitter. The information does however reveal that Facebooks popularity is also prevalent among millennials, although the same can be said for Instagram and Twitter.
