Michael LeBeau Alicia Vaandering History 142 December 1, 2015 Civil Rights Methods Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) used a persistent and successful method during the civil rights movements in Selma, Alabama. First, all acts were absolutely non violent. under no circumstance was any protest to fight back. By doing so, when the negroes were abused and the actions were posted in the newspaper or T.V. news, the whites and racists appeared to be savages taking advantage of the poor and defenseless negroes. To protest the SCLC organized multiple marches through the streets of selma and their goal was to get inside the courthouse to register to vote. Once the events began to get recognized, Martin Luther King organized a march from Selma to, the capital of Alabama, Montgomery. After being slaughtered by the police with batons and tear gas, Martin Luther King made a call out to all americans. He claimed that helping the negroes in Selma was apart of their duty as an american. As a result, thousands of whites including priests and other religious figures joined the march. This helped greatly because the police did not want to be seen harming other whites. Lastly, Martin Luther King consistently talked to the president, lyndon b. johnson, about stopping the segregation and violence in the south. The president refused to help and said he needed time for and act to be created to support the negroes. Martin Luther King continued to ignore the president's request to stop the march. Over time the president was fed up with Martin Luther King and the SCLC....
