Aesthetic Question: 1.) Do you believe that paintings by the same artist of the same subject shown at different perspectives should be place in the same gallery even if the perspective is the only thing being changed? Answer: Yes or No depending on opinion. Most likely yes considering perspective can change a lot of aspects of a painting including the shadows, placements, etc. 2.) What if only the color changes due to seasons or periods of time, should they be considered the same painting or be different works of art? Answer: Yes or No depending on opinion. Yes because they are still different paintings and seasons and color can change a lot of things including how the paintings make you feel. Art History: (See attachment) Art Criticism: Description: These are four paintings done by Claude Monet in the series of poplars. All four photos contain poplar trees from the same location, the Epte River. All of these paintings contain the same poplar trees only at different perspectives. 2 and 3 are shown at the same viewing point only one is shown in the autumn and the other is shown at dusk. These are all landscapes but 2, 3, and 4 show reflection on the water while 1 does not. 1 and 4 seem to be places in a more summer setting due to the use of more greens in the leaves rather than reds and oranges which would show a more fall or winter setting. Painting 3 shows a lot darker, shaded tones. Analysis: Similarities:         

Forms of natural and organic through the trees Contain hues of green, blue, and brown throughout all four paintings Texture is very natural, almost soft Perspective is shown by the smaller trees in the distance Trees are proportional with the distance Values in color where the sun is hitting the trees, goes from darker hues of purple, red, to greens and yellows. Vertical lines shown by the trees Most trees are parallel Movement is shown in the trees by how they are aligned

 

The formation and height of the trees show pattern Unity is shown by all the trees being poplars

Differences:  1 and 4 have more organic shapes shown by the placing of clouds in the sky  1 and 4’s clouds also show movement  3’s has more cool colors, purple, black, blue.  1, 2, 4 uses more warm color which implies the sun and daylight  1 shows the most use of value on the tops of the trees with the reds and black  1 is asymmetrical  2, 3, 4, have symmetry which is shown by the reflection in the water. Interpretation: All of these photos make me feel more familiar with the Epte river. Though never been there, these paintings make you feel like you’ve seen a different side of the river and what it looks like at different times. I like Monet’s idea of doing the same painting at different times and different perspectives. When an artist does one artwork on one setting, you only get to feel that painting on a certain level. Painting 4 is my favorite because I feel like I am on a boat in the river looking at the trees. They all make me very happy and peaceful at the same time and the colors along with the time periods they were meant to be at correlate perfectly. Technical Properties: Oil paint on canvas, all real landscapes at the Epte River, poplar tree series, canvas sizes vary although the two poplar paintings done in same perspective are the same size.
