Description

5 Characteristics of a hero: 1. Strange Birth Circumstances, Monster-Slaying, Problems with Women Goals of the essay: a.) Respond to the topic with specific examples b.) feature logical argumentation c.) reveal a thoughtful analysis of the relevant issues Hercules (1958) Plot—Centered around love interest with Princess Iole and Hercules’ journey to find the Golden Fleece (the people who are sailing with him are called the argonauts), King Pelias (Iole’s dad) is warned that someone will try to take him over. Good examples from the Hercules (1958) Movie— ● Hercules of Thebes competing in a discus throwing competition with the best thrower (min 26:00): presented as strong, Princess Iole and Hercules embracement of one another to create a dramatic love story, and added dramatic music/ sound effects. ● Addition of animals (again to make the plot more dramatic) to the movie: Lion fighting scene (min 28) to make the movie more dramatic; Hercules defeats the lion and kills it, Hephaestus dies after being ● Mortal vs. God Theme: Everytime Hercules presents his strength, the people of the city are frightened and he is left alone. Hercules then is seen in a scene with the gods saying he is tired of being the servant of the gods. He also is frustrated with immortality and inability to feel love, emotions, etc. He wants to have a family/ have children. He turns mortal. ● After turning mortal he can’t defeat the animals that he once could (bison!) ● Hercules as soon as arriving to the garden-link county, meets Amazon women ● (The two movies we will be using: Hercules & the Disney 1997 Version) I.

Intro:

-ancient myths are developed to adjust to popular entertainment by the emphasis of hyperboles: Both Hercules is hyperbolized in terms of his masculinity and strength; his love affair he has with Hercules with Princess Iole/ Hercules with Megara is hyperbolized to make audience sense the drama, fight scenes with Hercules (1958) fights lion as a god and wins and fights a bull as a mortal and Hercules (1997) fighting hydra) -add that the definition of a hero is different in time as well: Ancient definition: he who is favored by the gods/ given great strength Modern definition: he is noble, courageous, brave, II.

How characters are developed to be modern (popular entertainment) instead of ancient myths.

Topic Sentence: Usage of pathos—(evoking emotion in your audience) In order to adapt to the popular entertainment industry, directors aim to evoke emotion in those watching the movie. Since we are not physically present watching or listening to a story of Hercules as a myth, the director

must replace this by addition of sound effects, dramatic music, and plot. Examples of both: - Hercules 1958: Hercules constantly trying to impress Princess Iole, asking to turn himself in to a mortal because he wants a family and to feel emotions like love that immortals can’t feel. (Presents a dramatic love story, shows that the directors adjusted/hyperbolized the myth to appeal to a larger audience) -Hercules 1997: The story of Disney Hercules is modernized and censored to fit the audience they are trying to appeal to. In the real story of Hercules, he was despised by Hera, and Hera did many bad things to Zeus, like overcoming him with rage and making him kill his family. In the Disney movie, that is cut out and modernized. We see that as Hercules is in a happy family with Zeus and Hera. The definition of a hero has changed throughout time as well, and the change in definition can be seen within the two Hercules movies. III. What strategies do they follow or invent to turn some of the myths of Hercules and the other heroes into a long narrative?

Hercules (1958) Combine Hercules myths & Jason and the Argonauts myths, Character of Iole for romance/stereotypical princess, Incorporates some labors of Hercules to intertwine it in Jason's story, Jason is the sidekick and then becomes a co-hero, In the film, Hercules has a happy ending and sails off with Iole Disney Hercules: Phil is seen training Hercules for a long time,Hercules’ 12 Laborers Fast Forwarded?, Hercules love relationship with Meg, Hades being dramatic, hades makes herc fall in love with meg, all part of his plan to take over Mt. Olympus.

IV. How do the directors engage the audiences (evoke emotions like romantic, serious, action-filled, humor etc.) Hercules 1958: Romance of Hercules and Iole, Death of Pelius in front of Iole, Battle with the lion, bull and dragon, Hercules with the chain and columns, Training session Hercules Disney: the ending when herc gives his life to save meg, when herc finds out hades/meg betray him, 12 labors, fight against hydra, all around, Phil was a comedic relief, when Zeus zaps phil with a lightning bolt, herc as a baby beating up pegasus

V. How do the many components of Hercules engage a wide demographic sectors of audience such as men, women, (Europeans?) -both films are designed to include scenes that both genders and all people can relate to: ie.

women like the romantic aspects of the movie while men may prefer the fighting scenes. Hercules 1958: Attractive men and women, Iole as damsel in distress like in modern fairytales, Action packed fights, Romance, appeals to an older audience (animated vs. not animated) Hercules Disney: God vs. Mortal conflict (Hercules on a mission to be a god until the end— shows the human side of the movie), appeals by romance, appeals to children and families by being an animated film, characters look softer and cuter for childrens sake ie. pegasus. Still had action for the older viewers

VI. Conclusion/ What is are the overall themes: -Herc 1958: Even the greatest and strongest heroes have to face obstacles, Love, Right from wrong, Deception, what it means to be a greek hero -Hercules Disney: Courage, Sacrifice of self for meg (proves what a modern hero is), having a strong heart/ love trumping all
