CCMN279 Final Report

Informal Analytic Report: Best job sites for Ryerson Graduates Introduction The purpose of this report is to determine which job site is foremost for Ryerson University business school graduates to use in their job search. This report will investigate three major Internet job sites available to Canadians, one by one, and will compare and contrast the three most important features of these sites, as well as review the sites’ comprehensiveness and ease of use. Most important features are defined as features or tools of a site that facilitate and improve the job search process.

Evaluation Criteria Each site will be evaluated on features, ease of use and comprehensiveness, followed by a specific evaluation as seen in Figure B, based on the following criteria: Aspects/Points

Analysis Alternative 1: Indeed Indeed is one of the most popular job search websites today, with over 250 million visitors per month and 10 jobs added each second, globally (Indeed, 2020). Younger students looking for their first jobs often turn to this site, as noted in Figure A. Indeed is slightly harder to navigate, but has a highly effective search engine. With only a few keywords, hundreds of thousands of jobs are displayed in a few seconds. Indeed is slightly different from other job search websites, because Indeed is a job aggregator; this website gathers job postings from multiple different sources, including other job search websites, company websites, classifieds, industry websites, recruiting firms and more. (Bergen, 2019). The three top features that Indeed offers are a resume builder, self-assessments and email alerts. The resume builder feature allows users to build their resume from scratch in just a few minutes; applicants fill out a form including their experience, education and certifications; once completed, the resume is saved to the user’s profile, to be used for job recommendations and stored for recruiters. This feature is important for students and new grads needing help with drafting their resumes, and allows for job recommendations and suggestions, effectively making the site work on finding you a job even when you are not online. The site uses resume search to provide you with suggestions; and since they provide email alerts, you can customize your weekly update on recommended jobs and industry news, tailored to your industry and areas of experience. The self-assessments that Indeed provides allows applicants to showcase their skills and competencies, with a certification or assessment proving their

capabilities. Once completed, these self-assessments will allow applicants to be found by recruiters based on their abilities and skills. Employers can also request selfassessments from applicants, to give them a chance to prove themselves. For students specifically, Indeed offers to search using part-time and internship filters, however they do not provide many student geared tools.

While Indeed may seem like an excellent option, given it is an aggregator, however it does not guarantee results. Many users have reviewed the site and revealed that while there are many postings, applicants don’t receive an answer or action after application more often than not: “I have applied for over 100 jobs at Indeed and I haven't received one interview”, says one reviewer (Slone). Due to the high volume of postings and applicants, it can be difficult to apply through Indeed and get a response.

Alternative 2: LinkedIn LinkedIn is not only a job search website, but a professional social media platform as well; extremely popular among students and new graduates, as seen in Figure A, as well as industry professionals. LinkedIn allows professionals and students alike to build their professional network from the ground up. Starting even in the beginning of their undergraduate career, users can create a profile, build it and customize it by adding their experience, education and certifications as well as volunteer work, languages and awards. They can then connect with their peers, coworkers and other industry professionals to build their network and stay in the know about industry trends and career milestones of their peers. LinkedIn offers personalized job searching tools in your account and uses your experience and connections in your professional network to 3

suggest potential jobs and opportunities for you. Applicants can even flag their profile as “open to work” in order to garner attention from companies hiring, recruiters and headhunters. The professional social media network has an excellent layout, but can be tricky to navigate at times, especially when looking for specific tools. Notable features on LinkedIn include the ability to make connections, EasyApply and LinkedIn Learning. The ability to make connections is extremely valuable, because it allows users to keep in touch with their past present and even future employers; with the messaging feature, you can reach out to virtually anyone online. Keeping in touch means knowing which companies are hiring, which jobs are available and who to contact, something Indeed and TalentEgg do not offer. More often than not, people will post about job openings and other opportunities on LinkedIn, and these posts will show up in your feed, giving you a real chance to reach out to your connections and find employment. LinkedIn learning provides users with courses and certification programs to earn credentials and certificates to prove their abilities and add them to their professional profiles. Recruiters can search by certifications and find users, and when users apply for jobs they can be featured as a top applicant because of the assurance they give the potential employer. In fact, “Certification programs, and their credential holders, can be extremely attractive to prospective employers for numerous reasons: they provide assurance, regarding the skills of new employees” (Tittel & Kyle, 2011). Finally, EasyApply allows users to quickly apply to featured and suggested positions with this feature in the blink of an eye. On the user’s profile, a resume and contact information can be uploaded, and when interested in a job posting, can click the EasyApply button to send their information. This is especially important for new graduates since they will need to do an extensive search

and multiple applications, and EasyApply allows them to save time and energy, as well as help recruiters get consistent and concise information from all of their applicants. LinkedIn provides an extensive amount of special LinkedIn Learning resources geared towards students and new graduates, including courses and videos to help teach students how to improve their job search, their resumes, cover letters and profiles online. They also provide students with workshops to help improve on in-demand skills and competencies, and special job search filters for students to find the perfect internships.

Alternative 3: TalentEgg TalentEgg is an online career resource and job site specifically tailored for students and new graduates, where they can do more than just apply for jobs and internships, but also practice on improving their skills and competencies with TalentEgg’s Training Resources. TalentEgg provides training, workshops and partnerships with companies to give students the chance to learn new skills and other knowledge. TalentEgg also provides students with volunteer opportunities to strengthen their resumes and their extracurricular activities experience. TalentEgg’s website is impressive; the design and ease of use is phenomenal. The most impressive features offered include TalentEgg’s Training resources, Partnership Challenges and company features. The TalentEgg Training feature is invaluable to students, especially new graduates with little to no professional experience. This allows them to dive into something new, and to develop their abilities. Many students and new graduates lack necessary hard skills for their industry and don’t know how to learn them; this program eliminates the fear some

students may have and gives them confidence in learning. TalentEgg Partnership Challenges are also one of a kind experiences; the company partners up with other sponsor companies to run challenges and competitions in their field, to allow them to put their knowledge and skills to the test. Finally, the website features companies and what they do, organized by industry, to give students an idea of what they can do and where, and to learn about different industries. TalentEgg also provides an extensive selection of student resources, all of which are mentioned above, due to their specialization in students and new graduates’ recruitment, unlike LinkedIn and Indeed. Unfortunately, TalentEgg isn’t nearly as popular as its competitors, since on Figure A, only 2 out of 30 students chose the platform as their favorite job site.

Conclusion and Recommendation In conclusion, based on the research, evaluation criteria and survey, the TalentEgg online career source and job site is the foremost employment research site for Ryerson University business school graduates to use in their job search. It is recommended that students and new graduates use this platform when beginning their job search upon graduation, due to the platform’s superior offering of resources, ease of use and student-geared features that will enable them for success. Although not popular, as seen in Figure A, TalentEgg provides the best combination of comprehensive resources, ease of use and student-specific programs, proven in Figure B.
