Description

ESL 202/4 M: Developing Academic English Language Skills (Winter 2021) Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:15am-1pm Jan 13 – Apr 21 Online delivery 1. General Information Instructor: Contact details: Office Hours:

Juliane Martini (Department of Education) [email protected] (please use this email address, not the Moodle message system, to contact me) By appointment on ZOOM

2. Policies and Expectations: Extraordinary circumstances: In the event of extraordinary circumstances and pursuant to the Academic Regulations, the University may modify the delivery, content, structure, forum, location and/or evaluation scheme. In the event of such extraordinary circumstances, students will be informed of the changes. Attendance and Participation: The nature of this course makes attending and participating in synchronous Zoom sessions essential. Unlike lecture courses with an accompanying textbook, progress in ESL 202 can ONLY be made through active participation in synchronous Zoom sessions combined with good and regular preparation and review (e.g., tasks, asynchronous lectures, homework, readings). Preparation, Homework, and Review: In order to do well in ESL 202, it is essential that you prepare for each Zoom session and review the covered material afterwards. Preparing for Zoom sessions means doing ALL assigned tasks and practice assignments (see Moodle) and not just graded assignments. It also means noting down any questions that you want to raise in class or during office hours. Reviewing material after Zoom sessions means going over everything that was covered in class and identifying questions that you still have. The focus should be in particular but not only on new and/or challenging aspects. If you do not prepare for and review material after each Zoom session, you risk falling behind quickly, may face difficulty in mastering the course material, and may ultimately fail the final exam and the course. Behaviour: All individuals participating in courses are expected to be professional and constructive throughout the course, including in their communications. Concordia students are subject to the Code of Rights and Responsibilities which applies both when students are physically and virtually engaged in any University activity, including classes, seminars, meetings, etc. Students engaged in University activities must respect this Code when engaging with any members of the Concordia community, including faculty, staff, and students, whether such interactions are verbal or in writing, face to face or online/virtual. Failing to comply with the Code may result in charges and sanctions, as outlined in the Code. Recordings: Whole-class/main Zoom sessions (but not breakout rooms) will be recorded, and recordings will be made available to students on Moodle. Students may choose not to have their image recorded. This does 1

not include the use of Zoom when it is not recorded, such as in breakout rooms. In other words, students should definitely switch on their video in breakout rooms. Students will not be penalized should they choose not to have their image recorded during whole-class/main Zoom sessions. 3. Evaluations Participation and preparation Reading quizzes (10 x 0.5%) Vocabulary quizzes (3 best of 4, 3 x 2%) Paraphrasing (2 x 2%) Grammar quizzes (10 x 1%) Writing tasks (4 x 5%) Two Midterm Exams (2 x 15%) Final Exam (see important information on Standard Departmental Course Description)

5% 5% 6% 4% 10% 20% 30% 20%

Course Participation & Preparation: In order to obtain the full 5%, you must complete all graded and ungraded tasks for every class and attend and participate in synchronous Zoom sessions. Lateness/absences and/or (partially) incomplete task will lead to deduction of points. Writing Tasks: You will receive detailed instructions on these tasks as the course progresses. You must prepare two successive drafts for each assignment in order to obtain credit for each of these assignments although how much each draft is worth may vary from one writing task to the next. You will always be informed of how much each draft is worth before you write and submit the first draft. For dates, please see the course schedule and/or the Moodle calendar. Vocabulary Quizzes: The Vocabulary Quizzes assess your knowledge of the vocabulary from the units in the textbook and the best three out of four quizzes count towards your final grade. Please refer to the ESL 202 Target Vocabulary List posted on Moodle for all target words. For dates and units assessed in each quiz, please see the course schedule and/or the Moodle calendar. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS ALLOWED. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES. Grammar Quizzes: Following some of the units, you will have to complete ten Grammar Quizzes by the set deadline (please see the course schedule and/or the Moodle calendar for dates). NO LATE SUBMISSIONS ALLOWED. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES. Reading Quizzes: The reading quizzes are Moodle quizzes or assignments posted on Moodle. These reading quizzes are designed to assess your understanding of the reading text or texts BEFORE we discuss them in class. Quizzes will be posted on Moodle about one week before they are due. For submission deadlines, please see the course schedule and/or the Moodle calendar. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS ALLOWED. THERE ARE NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES Paraphrasing: You will be asked to paraphrase short excerpts. If you want, you may submit a second draft of your paraphrase after receiving feedback on and the grade for your first draft. If you choose to do that, the grade of both drafts will count towards the grade of this assignment (each worth 50% of the grade). For dates, please see the course schedule and/or the Moodle calendar. 2

Late submissions: Some assignments can be submitted late. However, you will lose 10% of the grade for an assignment for each day that it is submitted late. This also applies if you did not attend the live Zoom session that day. Word-processing: Select a legible font and font size (e.g., Times New Roman 12 or equivalent) and double-space (= format your paragraph as double-spaced using the paragraph formatting function of your word processor) your assignment. 4. Information on Academic Integrity: “Academic Integrity: The most common offense under the Academic Code of Conduct is plagiarism which the Code defines as ‘the presentation of the work of another person as one’s own or without proper acknowledgement.’ Plagiarism involves copying material, either word from word or as a paraphrase, from anything ranging from books, to internet sites, course notes, oral or visual presentations, lab reports, computer assignments, or artistic works. Plagiarism does not refer to words alone - it can also refer to copying images, graphs, algorithms, tables, and ideas. A "presentation" means more than written work: it means any method by which you submit work to your instructor. Even translating the work of another person into another language without citation is plagiarism.” (Source: http://www.concordia.ca/students/academic-integrity/plagiarism.html) To find out more, go to the Concordia’s Academic Integrity Website: http://www.concordia.ca/students/academic-integrity.html
