Title: The Role of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in the Classroom. INTRODUCTION I.

Main Idea: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in the Classroom. A. What is ADHD? B. Part of the brain where ADHD is affected. C. Treatments. D. Thesis: The symptoms of a child with ADHD may prevent them from receiving the most out of the conventional classroom setting and education system.

BODY I.

First Main Idea: Attention in ADHD. A. What goes wrong with attention in ADHD? Cognitive view. 1. “Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.” (Barkley, 1998). B. The neurological problem causing ADHD (what specific parts of the brain). 1. “Impairments in frontal-limbic networks may be linked to symptoms of hyperactivity. Functional neuroimaging studies have identified under- or over-activation of some brain networks in ADHD versus control subjects, in particular: Over-activation (reduced suppression) of the default mode network during task performance. Under-activation of frontostriatal and

frontoparietal circuits, and other frontal brain regions. Under-activation of systems involved in executive function and attention.” (Neurobiology of ADHD, 2017). C. How does this difference affect everyday life? D. How can this affect learning? II.

Second Main Idea: Classroom structure, learning obstacles for a student with ADHD. A. Conventional classroom structure. B. ADHD as a learning disability. 1. “Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder/learning disabilities (ADHD/LD): Parental characterization and perception.” (Brook & Boaz, 2005). C. Behavioral functioning. 1. Perceived Close Relationships With Parents, Teachers, and Peers. (AlYagon, 2016). D. How can students with ADHD be supported? 1. “ADHD and academic performance: Why does ADHD impact on academic performance and what can be done to support ADHD children in the classroom?” (Daley & Birchwood, 2010).

E. Future Classroom. CONCLUSION I. II. III.
