Nonverbal Perceptions

Nonverbal communication can come in many different forms such as how a person decides to design their office space. The factors that go into how a person perceives a space such as this can come from decoration, space layout, and tidiness. All of these indicators are what people use to evaluate the person along with how they conduct themselves and what is important to them. Evaluating a home office is a great example for these factors listed above.

Walking into the home office with a French double door entrance, immediately you see the desk at the end of the room facing the large window. In this large space there is a couch to the right facing the rest of the room and an ataman in front of the couch. The couch has two light blue decorative pillows on either side and a blanket draped down one side. Just past the cozy area is the office chair which is pushed into the large wooden desk. On the desk is two different picture frames, one is a picture of himself and his wife on their wedding day, and the other picture is of his family which is two daughters and a granddaughter. To the left of his large monitor screen is a notebook with a pen laid on top with a succulent behind for decoration. On both sides of his desk are two tall built-in bookshelves which are both filled with books both new and vintage along with some novelty items. On one of the shelves is a small chest like box and another shelf has a beautiful hourglass. On the left wall is a large gold framed mirror along with an abstract painting of the blue ocean that hangs next to a French sliding door that is closed shut. This large room has great natural lighting and has a beautiful view of a green hill and botanical landscape with plants and trees in the distance. The office is well kept and clean with vacuum lines in the soft looking carpet.

When looking at the office it is clear that this person is clean and maybe even OCD. The way the carpet is noticeably vacuumed is a clear sign that this person has attention to detail and has a specific way he likes his office to appear. This can also be seen from the pushed in chair at the desk. Another clear sign of his clean habits is the closed notebook with the pen laid on top, this indicates his tidiness and professionalism due to the fact there are no scattered pages or pens around the desk. This person also has an eye or appreciation for décor and creating a sophisticated atmosphere. This can be seen by many factors in the room such as the decorative blue pillows on either side of the couch that match the painting hung on the opposite wall. Another factor can be seen from the bookshelves, they have perfectly placed books in an organized and pleasing to the eye manner. The number of books can indicate that this person is an intellectual and enjoys reading. The other noticeable factor on the bookshelf is the hourglass, it is exquisite and looks expensive which means this man enjoys quality items and likes to invest in appearance. The golden mirror is another indicator that the man takes his appearance into account. Having a large mirror in the office space shows people he values his appearance and likes to look nice, maybe because he wants to make sure he looks professional for others and maybe because he is a little vain. When looking at the man’s desk it is clear he loves his family with the two framed pictures, this means he has a happy home with a loving and beautiful family. Perhaps this man also has his family framed on his desk as a reminder of why he works hard and wants to feel proud of the way he can provide for them. The size of the room can be an indicator that he likes his own space because the room is large enough to fit a couch with an ataman. Having this space may be important to him so he can have space to think which makes one infer that he is an introvert. The couch means he likes to rest and make his space feel cozy and relaxed while also professional with the neatly placed blanket and

pillow decorations. Lastly, when looking at his desk facing the beautiful view it shows he enjoys nature and the beauty of life. When looking at how the seating is arranged in the office it is important to note that this is a home office, so he does not receive other employees coming into his office. The couch facing the room and the chair facing away from the couch might indicate he is closed off or it could indicate the lack of interaction the man with other people in terms of his office space (Engleberg, 2016). To analyze the couch space a little closer it could be a sign he created this space as a zone of interaction (Engleberg, 2016) which he did for people who visit his office. He can sit with them and have a more intimate setting for communication.
