Smith 1 Hymowitz, Kay S. “Tweens: Ten Going On Sixteen.” The Longman Reader, edited by Judith Nadell, John Langan, and Eliza A. Comodromos, 10th ed. Pearson, 2012, pp. 190-94. Kay S. Hymowitz is a senior at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor of the urban-policy magazine, City Journal. Hymowitz expresses her acknowledgement and concern about the issues of preteens maturing too early and the factors that contribute to these issues. In the article she presents many statistics and examples of the new trends “tweens” are beginning to follow. Hymowitz discusses the negative impact that is on the younger generation from huge companies using unfair tactics to attract kids to their products. She also states the fact that these huge companies know that the tactics are harmful, but continue to use them anyway because it benefits their pockets at the end of the day. Hymowitz even explains her daughter’s experience with this phase, which she is going through currently, and adds personal acknowledgements she has made of her daughter’s changing trends.
