Competency statement for function area 1: to establish a safe, healthy, learning environment...

Description

Katerina Stanley

Competency Statement I To establish a safe, healthy, learning environment Safe To maintain a safe environment, I will ensure that my classroom always has the proper adult to child ratio. I will continuously make sure my materials are safe for the children in my care to use. I will include my students in creating the rules for the classroom. I will make sure that the students are only released to those individuals to which the parents have granted permission for the child to be released. I will ensure that myself and my co-teachers are taking the proper safety precautions at all times.

Healthy To maintain a healthy environment, I will perform daily health checks for each child. I will keep detailed and current health records for students. I will inform the children of proper hand washing techniques and assist them in performing those procedures. I will ensure that my preschoolers have sufficient time to nap or rest in the afternoon, ideally after lunch. I will ensure that the daily snack and meal schedules are followed and children are allowed to choose their own portions. When a child is sick, I will determine if they need to go home. If they must be sent home, I will inform the parents what needs to happen in order for the child to be able to return. I will inform children how to properly sneeze, cough, and blow their noses. I will help make parents a part of the team by providing a family handbook with my classroom policies. If I suspect any form of abuse or neglect, I will report it.

Learning Environment I will ensure that the children’s learning environment meets their developmental needs with a variety of learning centers and activities that match the skills they are learning and refining. The centers in the classroom will be set up near the resources they require. I will take into account any children in my class that have special needs. When making a schedule for preschoolers, I will allow them sufficient time to get involved in the activity. My schedule will be structured, but also allow for flexibility, if changes need to be made. My daily schedule and classroom will help the children learn and grow.

CS 1a The sample menu I provided is an example of a menu in a Head Start preschool setting. It ensures that the children have two balanced meals and a healthy snack each day. Water is served alongside every meal in the setting. If I were to change anything about this menu, I would provide more fresh fruit over the canned fruit.

CS 1b The room environment in which I teach is an excellent example of a preschool learning environment. It has clearly defined areas of play and learning. The messier activities, such as art or eating meals, are always done of the tiled section of the classroom while more active play and learning is experienced on the carpeted area. If I were to change anything, I would further limit the open stretches that the children tend to run in.

CS 1c The lesson plan included in my resource collection was designed by another teacher in my child care center. It clearly states the theme of the week and has different activities that

correlate with that theme. It does not state the weekly number, letter, shape, or color that are a part of learning in the day to day of the classroom....
