Concert Report of Daniel Caesar This concert was performed by Daniel Caesar along with a band playing in the background to accompany his vocals. The band playing also acted as the instrumentals of Daniel Caesar’s songs. The concert took place at the Boiler Room in London and was uploaded on April 5, 2018. I would assume that Daniel Caesar performed this concert either on Valentine’s Day or around Valentine’s Day considering this performance was a Valentine’s Day special. The time wasn’t specifically stated but I’d assume the concert started around 7-8 pm because Daniel Caesar told the audience to have a good night at the very end. The songs played were “Japanese Denim”, “Best Part”, “Take Me Away”, “Neu Roses”, and “Get You.” It was very appropriate for Daniel to be playing songs such as Best Part and Get You as those songs revolve around the theme of having a significant other. I’ve been an avid listener of Daniel Caesar, but it was an amazing experience to hear his raw voice over a live recorded performance. His vocals were accurate to how he sounds in his published songs which displayed how talented of a singer he is. An addition to the performance was the dimmed room with flashing yellow and purple lights. A spotlight was shining over Daniel Caesar making him pop out as the center of the stage compared to the band. He was sporting a white and green striped sweater along with light wash jeans which gave a very comforting feeling that matched the mood of the whole concert. In a

Ly 2 way, this allows Caesar to be more relatable and casual with his fans by not wearing anything extravagant. The camera also played a role in the full recording by paneling to the band at certain parts of the song which allowed the audience to appreciate the musicians who got to take part in the artist’s showing. The concert opened up with the bridge of “Freudian” which is sung by Daniel Caesar and Choir. As the audio played, the band joined in such as the electric guitar adding reverbs along with the cymbals of the drums. The vocals alternated between a low and slightly higher tone which also echoed giving a very soothing effect to the opening. This calming introduction helped prep the audience for the rest of the songs instead of being shocked right away. Daniel Caesar sang “Japanese Denim” right after with the bass, electric guitar, and drums accompanying him in the background. I immediately noticed that Caesar was swaying his arms while gripping the standing microphone at certain moments giving him a very soulful stage appearance. I noticed that Caesar’s breathing was a little noticeable and his tempo to the song was slightly off. However, he improved throughout the rest of the song and seemed more comfortable. The feel of the music was very similar to jazz or blues which went very well with the type of instrumentals that Daniel Caesar usually gravitates to. “Best Part” which is featured by H.E.R played right after “Japanese Denim.” Sadly, H.E.R didn’t appear in the performance, but I enjoyed it regardless. This song was the first piece I ever listened to from Daniel Caesar so I was very ecstatic when I was able to listen to it from a live recording. One thing I thoroughly enjoyed about this piece was the calming guitar strums that complimented Caesar’s vocals. Daniel Caesar was also playing the electric guitar along with the band which I really enjoyed because it shows how he’s more than just an amazing singer. I’ve always loved the lyrics of this song as H.E.R and Daniel Caesar sing about how they feel towards their own significant other.

Ly 3 They provide lots of creative analogies to describe their partner such as “you’re my water when I’m stuck in the desert.” The next song “Take Me Away,” is the first one I’ll be critiquing. It’s composed by Daniel Caesar and also features Syd who also wasn’t in the concert alongside Caesar. I’ve never heard this song so I had no idea what the piece would sound like. Overall, the performance was phenomenal as the band sounded great together and Caesar’s voice was really accentuated. One thing I liked about the piece was the little adverbs Daniel Caesar added to make the lyrics flow with the music more smoothly. Another thing I appreciated about the piece was Caesar’s ability to come up with such lyrics that went together so well in similar pitches. The song gave me an emotion of freedom due to how airy and light Caesar’s voice sounded. It gave me the image that I was flying to another location, or I was up in the clouds. Something unique about the performance was the electric guitar solo that appeared in the middle of the song as Daniel Caesar signaled to the crew to lower his microphone sound. It was very pleasing to see the talented guitarist also getting some recognition by the audience. Two things that I didn’t like about the piece was that it was a little more choppy sounding compared to his other songs and the slightly prolonged pauses. However, I generally liked the piece due to me being compelled by Daniel Caesar’s voice, song writing, and band players. “Neu Roses” was the song that appeared after. This was another song that I was unfamiliar with so I had no expectations when I heard it. The opening of the song was Daniel Caesar harmonizing with other female voices as the backdrop audio which was mesmerizing to listen to. The bass and drums were softly playing right after and transitioned to Daniel Caesar actually singing on stage as the lights brightened. The electric guitars that chimed in definitely set the mood for the song as everything was coming together. The final song and second song that I’ll be critiquing is “Get You.” The song was

Ly 4 written by Daniel Caesar and features Kali Uchis in the track. This is namely one of my favorite songs by Daniel Caesar so I had high expectations prior to him singing. One thing that I love about this piece is the instrumental pausing for a couple seconds for one part of the chorus so that Caesar’s vocals truly shine. Another thing that I really like about this song is the slowness of Caesar’s voice at certain point of the song that act like interludes which really pulled the flow of the song together. Two things that I didn’t enjoy as much were the drums coming out of nowhere and the beat being slightly off from the soundtrack. All in all, I enjoyed the piece because Daniel Caesar’s vocals were highly captivating. The music gave me a very relaxing emotion such as resting by the fireplace on a winter night. The quality of the performance was astounding due to the band matching with the vibe of the song and Caesar’s voice. Something that stood out to me during the performance was Daniel Caesar singing lower to hear the crowd sing along with him which was a very wholesome moment to watch. The whole concert was a joy to watch online especially from one of my favorite artists and I look forward to any concert I have the opportunity to go to in the future....
