Condoms in the Bathrooms Throughout the world, many agencies and governments are developing ways to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. When HIV/AIDS was first discovered, medical professionals believed it was a fatal disease. This was partly due to the stage in which the virus was detected. One in seven people were even unaware that they had HIV. (AVERT) Throughout the years, however, researchers have found medical breakthroughs that allow people to live full lives with this disease. In 2015, an estimated 36.7 million people were living with HIV. (AVERT) While medical advances have reduced, or slowed the mortality rate of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, there is a global desire to promote awareness and prevent spread of HIV/AIDS. Surprisingly, despite the development of sex education classes to promote awareness of this disease, many people are against the distribution of condoms to young adults. However, it is my opinion that the installation of condom dispensers would help prevent the spread of STIs on college campuses. Condoms, when used properly and consistently, will help reduce a person’s risks of transmitting and/or contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, in addition to preventing pregnancies. An estimated 50,000 new HIV infections occur in the U.S. each year. (amfAR)The condom is the only technology presently available to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV. (Advocates For Youth) Proper use of condoms should also be taught to students so as to ensure that the associated risks are reduced. A free seminar about proper use of condoms, and practicing safer sex, should be offered at the colleges who make condoms readily available to their students through the use of these dispensers.

Some people believe that giving young adults access to condoms will increase their level of sexual activity. In my opinion, giving out condoms does not promote sex, but instead promotes safer sex, due to the high rate of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancies. If students are going to have sex anyway, despite education and cautionary warnings, why not provide them with every opportunity to be safe while doing it. Others believe that it is the parent's role to educate their child about sex, and that the act of distributing condoms will take away the right of parents to educate their children about abstinence and religious values. In contrast, parents have reported that school-based sexual health education makes it easier for them to engage in conversations with their children, as it creates natural opportunities for communication to occur, and information to be shared within the home. (Teaching Sexual Health) In conclusion, the act of placing condom dispensers in easily accessible places on our nation's college campuses, including Camden County College, will help bring awareness to the growing pandemic of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases among students. In addition, it will also prevent countless individuals from contracting HIV/AIDS themselves.
